My 115 hp evinrude slows down after a few minutes running. The engine feels as if it's forceing itself but is unable to increase speed. I'm thinking it's electrical (maybe coils or spark plugs). Have anyone had this problem before or can help me out?

Thanks ;)

Welcome to the forum..Eddie!

Can you give us your model number.

First thing I would do is a spark test. You can buy tester at auto supply place. Or make one, Many good ones here on the forum. Just do a search on spark tester.

Fire should jump 7/16 gap. Let engine warm up on muffs at idel only. Sounds like you may have one or more coils breaking down when it gets warmed up.

Could be other things as well, but I would suspect coils first.

Good Luck!

Goodoleboy,

Thanks for the reply...I'm going to visit a local boat accessory shop and purchase several tools including the spark plug tester. I kind of suspect that it's the coils also... I will post my findings as soon as I check the spark test.
Again thanks for the reply...

Eddie....

Re: Evinrude slows down after running for a few minutes

I have to ask, does it act this way in neutral using the warm up lever? If not your problem may be a mechanical issue in the lower unit.

Other things to check: If you do NOT hear a beep when you turn your ignition switch (overheat alarm) you may have a bad water pump impellar and not know it.

Considering the age of the motor check the inside of the spark plug boot/connector for rust or anything that might degrade the connection. Small amounts of rust would cause your ignition system fits when the engine warms. Larger amounts of rust will KILL a power pack. This I know from experience. If you suspect this is a problem just replact the boots. They generally only cost about $3 each and will save you a bunch in the long run.
** I can recommend a test for the coils on the motor. If you need it just let me know.

Could also be your stator bypassing to ground when the engine warms. Again I can recommend a test.

Re: Evinrude slows down after running for a few minutes

When in neutral, it's fine..Is when after running it for a few minutes it acts up. today I tried it out again and it ran fine. I reached 32 in nothing. I stopped it and restarted . It started fine , I increase the throttle for speed and it turned off. It then turned on fine, but wouldn't still take speed. Well, I have to take it out again from the water. Now I did notice the throttle level to be a little stiff then usual. Coils have been replaced, spark plugs etc. I had some pins lose and were fixed , by a buddy. Any test recommed, please tell me. Thanks

hI TO ALL,

I APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S HELP, BUT BAD NEWS..DID MY CHECKS AND FOUND BAD SPARK PLUG CABLES. TOOK IT OUT TO TEST AND IT WORK FINE. AT FIRST IT WOULD TURN OFF DID TAKE OFF AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. WEEL , WHILE TAKING THE FAMILY FOR A RIDE, THE ENGINE STALLED AND THERE WAS FIRST A LOUD NOISE ; WHICH WAS PROBALBLE HEARD IN CHINA (SOME HUMOR TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER). WHEN WE CHECKED THE ENGINE , SOMETHING PROTRUDED THROUGH THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE AND WHEN IT BROKE THROUGH IT 'ALSO DAMAGED MY STARTER. NOW I HAVE A BROKEN ENGINE AND AM IN NEED OF A POWER HEAD. HOW CAN I FIGURE OUT MY ENGINES YEAR, ETC? PLEASE NOW I REALLY NEED HELP! WHAT A LOSEER I AM....

Look for the model number and post it here.

How did you go from 'bad plug wires' to 'hole in engine'?
