Hi folks! I'm looking for some sort of line cutter for outboard motors. I'm running a 2860 ProKat with twin Yamaha 225 four-strokes.

I've seen some line cutters (Spurs) for shaft drive boats, but there seems to be a real lack of anything for outboards.

Does anybody know of a product, possibly like a skeg mounted razor, that will slice a line before it fouls your prop and spins a hub or snaps a drive shaft?

Illegal longlines are a serious problem where I fish in San Carlos, Mexico. They sometimes extend for many miles. They are not well marked (often only with empty plastic Coke bottles or quart motor oil containers. By the time you see them at cruise, it's often too late.

Any help appreciated!

Hi Constancia,

Ever considered Ringprops? Check out their website:
http://www.ringprop.com/home.html

I'm not specifically recommending them, but they claim to drive through lines without snagging.

Well, that would do it -- but they don't make anything for bigger motors. Looks like only aluminum and smaller horsepower motors. I'm running counter-rotating 17" stainless steel props for off-shore performance.

But thanks for the suggestion; I had never heard of anything like ringprops before!

Ringprops?
And I thought the blade tips were the main factor in performance.
D

There used to be a stainless steel blade that you would epoxy to the gearcase, that would cut fish lines as the prop blades passed. I think it was called a "Line Shark". I never knew anyone who used one.

but youre in arizona?
Didn't you know that Arizona has one of the highest per capita boat ownership populations in the US? (seriously).

I know, people see "Arizona" and think "Offshore, what? Did California fall into the sea?"

I usually don't go to California. Nothing personal against you left-coast guys, but it's too crowded, expensive, and heavily regulated. I can be enjoying some of the best saltwater fishing in the world with about a 4 hour tow. Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico is my home port (more or less) and about 220 miles from my front door. San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico is a bit further south, but has two beautiful marinas full of million dollar sportfishers, great billfishing and tournaments, mahi, tuna, and yellowtail. We're towing down there for a week of serious fishing at the end of June.

We've had a banner year in Penasco this year fishing a reef that's about 50 miles out, so yeah, that's a pretty good ways offshore. Lots of large red snapper, white seabass, various large grouper, and in May, I wrangled a 100 lb. black seabass that was like being hooked to a locomotive. So, life in the desert ain't all that bad! :)

Which brings me back to why I'm looking for a line cutter -- there's no such thing as Vessel Assist or the Coast Guard when your offshore in Mexican waters. You're pretty much on your own if something goes wrong. You might be able to raise somebody on the VHF to come give you a hand if you're lucky.
