I bought a boat with a 1989 evinrude 60hp and the previous owner took off the automatic oiler. He said to mix the oil 3ounces per gallon. is this the right amount or do i need to adjust?

That's pretty close, but a little rich. One 16 oz bottle per 6 gallons is 50:1. I buy the Wal-Mart brand cause it's cheap and it does carry TCW-3 certification. But others prefer a brand name.

Re: gas/oil mix

here's the math aiming for the "ideal" of 50:1 for a typical water cooled, already broken-in, non-racing 2-cycle engine.<br /><br />"normal" 6 gallons X 128 oz/ga = 768<br /> divided by 1 pint X 16 oz/pint= 16<br /> yields 48:1 <br /><br />do the same math for 1 gallon X 128 oz/ga = 128<br /> divided by your 3oz<br /> yields 42.6:1<br /><br />so, yes, it is a little oil rich, but probably will hurt not a bit. Some might say it's a bit of lubrication insurance. If you are smoking and/or spark plugs foul up, then its way too oily.
