I'm looking at a 17ft.campion to buy and it's powered by a 1996 Johnson 150, is there anything specific to this year of motor I should look for or just regular stuff.
I figured check compression (what should it be?), fluids for contamination, hours and maintenance records.
Anything else or any helpful pointers?
Thanx

Uhhhhhhh....make sure it runs?????? LOL...just kiddin' Zerex. A test drive would be nice. Make sure it starts easily and idle is smooth. Transition thru the throttle range should also be smooth and without hesitation.

Get any maint records that may be available or find out what has been done to the engine in the past.

Compression and lower unit lube check is also a good idea as you asked.

If you do get a ride on it, check the engine temp and water flow.....maybe ask owner the last time the cooling system was serviced...ie...impeller and t-stats.

Ask if the oil reservoir has been emptied, cleaned and a new filter installed. This is something a lot of folks over look.

Ask questions....a lot of them. Anything you can think of, even the trivial kind like was the rig used a lot. What kind of boating....fishing, skiing, what? This can tell you if the engine has be rode hard or just used on occasion.

Maybe some of the other guys can add.

Good luck!

If you have never driven a boat with that kind of performance, It would be a good idea to have someone along for the first few times that has. That rig set up properly will give you quite a ride
