Hi i'm new here and i am green in boats too. I recently bought a boat and i am having some problems with it. I have a Johnson electric sea horse, 40 hp, 196-something ( maybe 61-62 . It starts very well and roars nicely but when i try to hit the gas it jumps aut of gears. in revers it goes smoothly but forward no. I tried at more than douzen shops in my area ( Montreal) but nobody wants to work on it. Is there anybody who can tell me what to do? Should i start looking for a new engine?

thanks

Welcome to the forum!

My guess is that your clutch dog is slipping in lower unit.

Could also be that your not fully engaged into forward gear. Disconnect shift cable and see if shift control lever at motor will go forward any more than where cable was pulling it to.

Clutch dogs are not that hard to replace. In some cases they can be turned around.

But since yours dosent do anything in forward then I would not bother turning it around. Just buy a new one.

You will have to have a OEM service manual for your motor.

Good Luck!

Welcome aboard.
Can you please tell us whether this is an electric start with 2 cables going to the engine from your remote?
Or is this what is called an "Electromatic",which means that your remote would only have one handle and a button to push if you want to go forward or reverse?

It is possible to move the position of the handle on the shaft by loosening a screw on the side.I would try that before spending a lot of time on trying to replace a clutch dog that since it works well in reverse is probably just fine.
