Starvin my Johnson???

I purchased a 1987 Johnson 40 VRO electric start (J40TLCUD) that I converted to a premix fuel system because it wasn't running right. All new stuff--Bombardier "standard" fuel pump (PN 438556),inside and outside fuel lines & bulb, glass filter (before bulb), fuel tank, CLEANED and REBUILT CARBS(floats set level). Capped the old VRO pulse port. It runs OK at idle and higher RPM in my driveway when cold but let it set for half an hour in the Florida heat and it starts hard and will not rev up when you advance the throttle, like it's starvin, just like before all the work! Pumped the bulb-not much difference. IF I flip the electric primer lever from prime position to run, while idleing, the motor shuts down (Whats with that?). Timing is OK but it advances somewhat before butterflies open??? Compression is good. Noticed during carb tear down that, according to my manual, the carbs are for a 55 COMM??? (low, intermediate and high speed orifice) Haven't had it in the water yet, can't swim!

Re: Starvin my Johnson???

Welcome jamin!

Let's address the primer solenoid red lever first. It's supposed to be in the normal (auto) position which is pointing to the back of the solenoid...all the time. The only time you use the lever is if the solenoid fails. Then you flip the lever counter clockwise till it stops. This lets the fuel go to the carb throats for priming while the engine cranks. After the engine starts, flip the lever back. If your flipping the lever to manual prime while the engine is running, you are flooding it out.

What have you been doing with the red lever?

Thank you for that information on the red lever, my SERVICE manual didn't explain it's purpose so clearly. When the engine was running (badly) the lever was in the proper (rearward--pointing towards the far end of the solenoid) position. So I flooded it when I flipped it around!
There still remains the major "starvin" when hot problem??

When it starts to do the problem again, check the spark at each cylinder. Should jump a 7/16 to 1/2" gap with a hot thick spark. It could be that the heat is effecting an ignition component. Check under the flywheel for any goo that may be laying there.

Good snappin spark, OUCH!*! Cylinders firing at proper intervals per my handy dandy induction timing light. Ran slightly rough at idle then I advanced the throttle and saw the timing increase as it's supposed to but as soon as those butterflies opened it stalled. What about those "55 Comm" carbs are they OK for a 40 or do they put out too much air or gas for the cylinders to handle?

The type carbs are OK. When you cleaned the carbs did you soak them? If so, in what?

New kits, right?

Used Spray carb cleaner, no soak, looked rather clean to start with; yes, new kits. Didn't remove the calibration pocket core plug or the lead shot. Probably my undoing!

I had my '89 40 open last night playing with the fuel primer & yes the timing starts to advance slightly before the butterflies move.
Have you checked link & sync and the timing.
Search for Joe Reeves method of timing. It's done without engine running. It worked for me & should at least get you close.
