I have a 1973 70 hp evinrude that seems to have a water pump problem .The motor does not have a tell-tail . I just got done fishing and was flushing motor when I noticed the water was not coming out of the area above the lower unit nor was it spraying a fine mist from the 2 port holes below the cowling.

After that I noticed a little white oil around the lower unit top drain plug and yes its got water in it(full) .Heres my question - can a bad water pump cause the lower unit to leak?
I did hit buttom(sand & muddy) twice at a very slow idle so that might be what did it.
Id like to try to replace the water pump myself however im not a mechanic so it will be a learning expereince. Please pass along any advice in doing it.

You have some great advice from IBN - follow it.

It is most likely that you have two seperate things goin here. Suggested plan of action.

1. Replace the water pump.
2. Drain the oil/water out of the grarcase and refill making sure that you replace the seals on both the fill and drain plug. This is the most likely source of the water leak.
3. Run it and recheck the oil. If water is still getting into the gearcase you need to determine where. You can do this with a vacume and pressure test. Check your manual for that or use the red search at the top of the page.

Also if this motor is new to you I'd replace the thermostats.

It seems my little boy put the hose to the port holes just below the cowling accorrding to him "to help clean the boat"-children-gotta lovem! Would that put water in the lower unit? I notice is was mostly clear not well mixed with oil.

No...it wont put water in the lower unit.

As so little just said its most likley the o ring on the fill or drain screw.s.

Water thats still clear has just entered the lower unit. Once its been churned around awhile it will turn milky...not good!

Time to re seal lower unit if so.

Good luck!

So would the seal and or water in lower unit affect water pump?
Also would the water pump going bad cause water in oil?
I went through the thickest grass(sea weed) at the ramp so I might have sucked up some in the motor. I assumed the grass is around the impeller because I found a small hole in the intake screen.

No... your water pump is in no way assoaited with your lower unit.

The only thing they have in common is that they both run off the same drive shaft.

if your impeller looks chewed up even a little bit..then replace it..its cheap.

Lot better than riskin an over heat...and possible engine damage..which aint cheap.

Luck tu ya....and take at ladd fishin ever chance ya get...lifes short!

Re: Water pump / lower unit problems

it may be alright . place it in a pot and heat it up . see if it opens at the right temp . use a cooking themoter . or just replace it . it could be clogged with sand may not need replacing . but if yiuy remove it you can clean it out better. first pull the foot and hook a hose to the tube and crank . see if water goes through . that moddle dont have a pisser . you should be able to hold your hand on it till a count to 4 after it has run for a while

Re: Water pump / lower unit problems

if it has a hole it bust be coroded or it rubbed something . if it is croded in one spot it could be some where else . it can be patched and may last a long time . or not especialey if it is corosion .
