Is there any trick to putting the connector back together ?
what gear should I have it in when re-connecting the lower screw ?
Mine has the motor in neutral only when the lever is in forward position.I cant get the connector rod into the joining block far enough.
Any help gratefully appreciated. :)

Re: Shift rod connector 1976 35hp

Hey old mate! Usually lever should be in forward for best access of lower bolt in the shift connector. I have a relatives little 9.9 apart and could only get to the top bolt so I took it off. If you can't "push" lower unit onto the shift rod try getting it lines up and use the shift lever to push it in the hole. You may need to spread the linkage a little with a screwdriver to help ease it in.

thanks bud...
I'll give it a try.I can't get the recessed part of the rod {that takes the screw to hold it in place }all the way into the connecter block.
I read another post that says to jiggle the prop to engage the dog fully.
Between lining up the rod & block, then jigglin the dog,I might get somewhere.
Will post results.
Thanks.

Yeah if it is not fully in gear you won't get that little bit of extra travel that you need.

Job done.Thanks mate.
Just had to lift the lower rod up with a pair of needlenose pliers.
Once it was in the connector block far enough, the rest was easy.
This is a record...only 4 postings to fix my problem !!
I wasn't going to bother you,as you said you were busy, but thanks for the help.
Hope to put it in the water on the weekend...will let you know the results
take care...

Just a little FYI guys....stuff you may know already.....I find it helps if the gear case is in reverse an the gear shift in forward in a lot of installations. Gives a little more room to connect up the link. When you push the halves together, turn the prop back and forth to clear the dogs and let the lower unit slip into forward. Works for me.

Good info OBJ. Seems like one engine needs to be reverse while another likes forward. I guess it's whichever works. Thanks for the tips.

Oil helps a lot, penetrating oil even better. Its carbon that blocks. Is it up and running roscoe ?? We are all curious.

OBJ,Dane and the ever reliable fireman...
Thanks for keeping up. As I just fixed the shifting issue the other day,I aint taken her out yet...but will on Sunday.
I started her up and she still idles a treat. The telltale works fine,I think it pisses with a little more pressure now.
One curious thing,but......The water that comes out of the 2 exhaust holes is quite hot. It always was, even without a thermostat. It's still quite hot now.Is that normal ??.The water coming out of the pisser is barely tepid.
I'll let you all know how she goes.
Thanks fellas.

The water from the iddle exhaust releif holes usually is hot, but not uncomfortably hot for your hands. Remember this water cools exhaust gasses. As long as there is plénty of water mixed with exhaust, dont worry.

Roscoe you have to remember that running without a thermostat you created an engine that runs cool all the time. The tstats should keep your engine at the optimal operating temperature which will be fairly warm. If you were running WFO without a tstat then you were probably cooling that engine enough with that water flow for it to be basically cold. A cold engine uses more fuel. You know that your engine runs better when it is warmed up than when it is cold. Good luck on voyage. Let us know.

Re: Shift rod connector 1976 35hp

Well,folks...everything is perfect.
Took it out today, and it goes just great.
Without the help of you guys, this would not have happened.I was ready to drop the motor.
When I took the compression readings,I had convinced myself to expect less from the motor, considering 12psi less, and the cooking I did.
Today,it ran like a dream.I went easy at first, and found myself checking the pisser every 30 secs.
When I opened her up,everything was great.from idle to WOT it went smoother and stronger. It even runs quieter.
Before I cooked it,the top speed was 42kmph {about 26mph}.If you remember,I was working out the bugs in my link & synch set up .
Today ,it got to 39kmph,which I was more than happy with.
I put a can of Mercury brand sea foam stuff thru it,and I think it helped.It ran smoother and the speed nudged up to 43k {26.5 mph}
And still with a crappy old prop !!
My engine has NEVER run this strong, smooth or quiet !!!!!
G Dane, you are a genius. This is the second time this bloke has pinpointed a problem for me. Many, many thanks to you.
My genuine thanks to all you other guys who helped me with the link & synch problem, and with the cooking and subsequent shift rod postings.
Fireman 57..OBJ..Mark a64..lark2004..nordy..Andrew Hartley... Serious thanks to all you guys.....every one of you constructively contributed to solving my woes.
Anyway...as I said , it is simply running better than it ever has. Spring is just around the corner.
La vita e bella. Life is beautiful.
Thankyou boys.Another success

Thanks for the kind words, Roscoe. I'm not genious, but I'v had a couple of those great motors, and worked on them, and you gave a good and exact discription of problems, only glad to help. I really enjoyed your posts and humor. Post back anytime.

Re: Shift rod connector 1976 35hp

Your a good man,Dane.
Will put compression tester on this week...just for curiosity, but, because I don't really care what the comp. says.It goes and sounds better, and runs as smooth as a baby's bum.
I didn't check the temp of exhaust water when I flushed it today{you know you should flush ,don't you ?? }
Everyone tells me my motor should have ran cold without the tstat. That exhaust water was always hot.Hotter than the hot tap water.I think the gasket may have been leaking gas for longer than I thought.
Anyway,thanks again...take care :)

Re: Shift rod connector 1976 35hp

Even if it runs cold, the exhaust water from the upper holes will be warm, as it is mixed with HOT exhaust gas. It smoothens out the sound by cooling down the gasses which will decrease the volume of it. Did you know gasses can expand 40 times by heat ??

Don't go getting all scientific now,Dane.
The water from the 2 holes is not as hot as it was, meaning the tstat is doing it's job.I think !.
Gee ,I'm so pleased with the performance of the 35 now.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again...without the excellent help from you guys, this never would have happened.
Thanks again...
