I know this is a pretty common problem on any brand of outboard. I have gotten such great responses on this forum, I figured this was the place to start. Does anyone have any secrets or tricks for getting stuck flywheels off? I think I have tried them all. Biggest question I have is what do you do if you can't get it unstuck? I have heard numerous times where guys were told if it didn't come loose you would have to cut the drive shaft. Tell me how that would be done? Since you can't get the lower unit or the powerhead off it appears you would basically have to destroy the exhaust housing to get to the shaft. After you cut the shaft you would have to get the splined end out of the powerhead. Then you would have to disassemble the lower unit to remove the reaminder of the drive shaft. Sure doesn't sound feasible to me. Anyone have other ideas?

Re: Flywheel stuck

Put the puller on, tighten it up real tight, and give it a whack every 15 minutes or so with a hammer (on top of the bolt that tightens down onto the crankshaft) and keep the tension up.

One fellow was doing this, thinking that it would never come off. It popped off while he was on his computer asking what to do about a stuck flywheel!

Iam haven trouble understanding your question. You start by asking how to remove a stuck fly wheel.

Then you want to cut the drive shaft..I think!

Welt anyways...to remove stuck fly wheel...Put a puller on crank shaft and use three grade 8 bolts to secure fly wheel to puller.

Tighten large screw on puller really good and then whack the hell out ov the large puller screw with shop hammer.

If you have a drive shaft frozen into the crank shaft and can not remove lower unit.

Use recipicating saw..AKA..saws all!...cut drive shaft off.

Then weld slide hammer onto remaning stub frozen into crank shaft splines. Use some heat on it if nessary.

Good luck!

Be aware that when you "whack" the top of the flywheel puller bolt, all that force is being trasmitted to the bottom ball bearing (thrust bearing) on the crankshaft and can flatten the balls and dimple the race. Aslo in extreme cases, the crankshaft "cheeks" will bend at the crank pin and connecting rod.

On removeing drive shaft if you cant even get an opening wide enough to slide saw blade into crack.

Then remove prop shaft and remove pinion nut and let lower unit drop from drive shaft.

Then use slide hammer and heat to remover from crank shaft splines.

Good Luck!

I should've made my point a bit clearer, a whack is a sharp tap.

Not beating the cr@p out of it.

Ok...If a reasonable whach....Just shie of a hell of a whack dosent pop it lose.

Then try some "reasonable" heat around the crank and fly wheel...Not glowing red or anything.

We'er gona get at sucker off their..even if we have to pour nitro glycrin down the key way slot.

Next problem...please!...Grin!

Good Luck!

If you need to heat the shaft, don't forget to replace the top crankshaft seal.

Re: Flywheel stuck

And dont forget to laeve the top flywheel nut screwed on just a little bit. I had a stuck flywheel once and after hitting it with an air impact wrench about 4 or 5 times and still nothin set the wrench down, scratched my head a little bit then all of a sudden a loud pop and a 200hp evinrude flywheel poped about 2 feet into the air. Darn good thing I hadnt had a beer yet because - 1. I probably would have peed my pants from the gunshot sound of it coming loose right next to me and 2. I still had quick enough reflexes to catch it before it hit the ground! lol

Re: Flywheel stuck

Sorry guys! I did get mixed up. I actually gave you two problems. Both are problems I run into alot since I live near the coast(saltwater). The flywheel problem is one I'm dealing with at the moment. I have another motor sitting upside down in the shop with a stuck drive shaft. I been soaking it for the last year with PB BLaster. I drilled a hole in the exhaust housing toward the top, took a tube and filled it with everything from PB Blaster to Aero Kroil. Every now and then I'll give it a try and the power head moves slightly but still no luck. I haven't tried it lately(about 6 months). I'll let ya'll know how it goes. Thanks for the advice.
