Re: 1973 EVINRUDE FISHERMAN OUTBOARD
I have the same in 1969 model. It is a two cyl. 50:1 oil mix. If you do not know the history of it, it would behoove you to pull the head (easy to do) and check the maze of water channels for corrosion. Both around the cylinders and under the head gasket on the head (assuming the gasket comes off with the head). The gasket cost 10 dollars . I bought one today. The little cover on the head is the thermostat cover. Pull it and check the stat for corrosion. You will need that gasket too, and maybe a stat and stat seal.

The lower unit comes off easy. The water pump is in a black cover at the bottom of the driveshaft. Four 5/16 head screws hold it. Watch for the roll pin at the top of the driveshaft, not far under the splines. People break them often because during re-installation of the lower unit, it must fall into a slot. I found that the water pump is rather weak when no forward motion is occurring. So I wouldn't idle in neutral for too long.

If you get someone to do the water pump for you, make sure they know about the roll pin that must be aligned during re-installation of the lower unit.

A fine, classic o/b. Representative of days we will no longer see. To really appreciate it's craftsmanship, go do what I did today. Look at an 05 Johnson. Check out the motor cover latch, the tilt lock lever, the shift lever.

RubberMaid comes to mind.
