Hi There
Just bought a Johnson 85 V4 Hydro electric Drive. Don't know the year. The starter motor spins but does not raise to turn the flywheel. There is plenty of power in the battery. Is this a starter of a celeuniod (sp) problem? What is the solution? Many thanks from a newbe.
cheers
gerry

Gerryg,

Try a drop or two of oil on the starter shaft just above the bendix.

DHP

A bad connection can cause that too if your bendix is nice and free already. Remove all your starter connections (including at the solenoid) and clean them well.

The bendix is the gear on top of the starter that engages the flywheel gear. Should be a little bit of shaft just above that starter gear.

10 weight oil is recommended-wd40 will work short term then evaporate and start sticking again.

Hi All
Thanks for your advice. Well I oiled the shaft and cleaned all the leads as suggested. The gear now rises but the starter does not have enough juice to turn the crank. Tomorrow I will check the volts at the cellenoid and the starter to rule out an electrical problem. Any guesses as to the problem. The battery has 13 volts.
cheers
gerry

Bad connection somewhere. Clean all the connections especially the ones connecting to the battery. Feel around for anything (connections) that seems to be getting warm. Double check the voltage at the battery while you crank the engine. It should not drop below 10.5v.

If the terminal at the starter is getting pretty warm, it's possible the stator commutator (inside the starter) is getting really dirty and the brushes aren't making good contact. Easy to fix and the brushes are still available.

Re: Starter motor gear will not raise.

Hi Again

Yes! she runs, and now back to draining the swamp. This motor was idle for a few years and the shifter did not work. My mechanic got it working by just using it for an hour and recomended frequent use. The boat then sat for another year and now I'm not sure how the shifter is working. On his recomendation I replaced the gear oil with diesel fuel and ran it gently for a few minutes. Now the type C oil is in. When I put it in gear with the ears on I don't hear clunk from the engine but the prop spins faster as I give it throtle. Should I put the boat in the water now to test it and exercise the shifter or is there smoething else I should do first? Again thanks to OBJ and Paul for seeing me through on this.
cheers
gerry
