I have been looking for a wiring harness for the motor on my 1970 Evinrude Big Twin Model No. 40053. I don't seem to be having any luck. Does ayone know where I might find one or would it be better just to find someone to rewire the motor?
Is there a company that will make the wiring harness for me?
I think the orginal part no. is 0383325.

good luck on finding one. They aren't that hard, If you have a schematic you can make your own. I have.

Try tcoutboard.com. Twin Cities Outboard may well have a harness for your Big Twin. These are getting harder and harder to find.

Thank for the help. Lark2004 ... I do have a schematic but I think I would need to get someone
to wire it for me. I just might try it myself.

Thanks also to CATransplant ... I emailed tcoutboard but have not heard back yet. I did a reply from Outboard Jacks but they want $225.00 for a "good" used one. Doesn't that seem a little high?

the wiring isn't hard, as I said. Just make sure you have a good quality crimping tool, and use good quality crimps. The schematic in the manual tells you the color and guage of all the wires. You would need to find a suitable connector to connect the engine harness to the rest of the boat. The original Evinrude on is a bit hard to find.

Keep an eye on my project, I am about to do that part as we speak...

Flamingo,

They're not cheap...that's for sure. You could watch eBay...they show up occasionally. Or you could just make your own and skip the whole mess.

Lark suggested using a good crimper. That will work, but I prefer to solder all connections, then use heat-shrink tubing to insulate them. Either way will work, but the soldered connections will not corrode later on like the crimp connectors will.

It's not all that easy to find a pair of connectors with the right-sized terminals for this wiring job, sadly. You might use more than one, with one just for the large wires and another for the smaller wires.

even better (and yes, I know this has been flogged to death in the electrics forum) is to crimp (for mechanical strength) and then solder (for longevity) the terminations.

As far as connectors go, try a hobby shop that sells electric radio control cars, They should have plugs that will handle the heavy current. They are called "DEANS PLUGS" and are made by (suprise suprise....) Deans U.S.A. Eagle products also make one that is almost the same. Both are good connectors.
Radio-Shack or even an auto store should have the other multiway connector for the smaller wires.
