Yes, you can test the coil with a multimeter, but, your more than likely not going to get conclusive results. The coils primary and secondary windings may show OK when cold but the coil will fail when it gets hot. The primary winding should be in the range of .3-.4 ohms , the secondary, 3-7Kohms.<br />If the coil resistances look about right, the next thing to look at is the condenser. If it's leaking or shorted, you'll get no spark.<br /><br />The mag systems on these older motors are pretty much bullet-proof. They are easy to troubleshoot and the replacement parts are cheap. If you have the original coils, I'll almost guarantee they are bad. Hairline cracks in the outer shell are a dead givaway that they need replacing.
