On the trailor with key off, spark plug wires off and motor in gear. Try to turn prop by hand. See if the prop will turn freely without turning the motor. Watch the prop shaft to see if its turning with the prop. What we're trying to find out here is whether your prop hub is spun or whether you broke something like your driveshaft.
If the prop is hard to turn and is making everything else turn then you most likely have a spun prop hub.

It's obvious that you have to remove what's left on the prop sleeve without damaging the drive shaft. It looks like that prop hadn't been removed in a long time, by the looks of the rust.

One possible solution is to slide a shaft coupling or shaft collar with the same I.D. as the prop sleeve's O.D. and tightning the set screw(s). Then using the gear puller on the shaft coupling to draw it off of the splined drive shaft. PB Blaster and heat may have to be used too.

Here's a link to a site with pics of the shaft coupling and shaft collar.
Link

On the left hand side , click on Collars, Shaft Collars

I would resist the urge to drive it off the shaft with hammer blows. Damage to the drive shaft, bearing carrier etc. could result.

thank you for your reply Xcusme

PB blaster ?? heat applied by a torch .....

no resiting that urge to pound it off .... try-ed a gear puller but ended up striping the threads on the gear puller ....

I would hesitat about using heat at this stage.

Try soaking it with a penetrating oil for a week first. Then see if you can remove it useing Xcusme's idea.

If that doesn't work and you do end up heating it to try and remove it, you will need to replace the rear gearcase seal as well.

PB Blaster Link is a "penetrating catalyst" that has worked wonders. Heating is a tricky issue in this case. The object would be to heat the outer part quickly so that it would expand. If more heat is applied it would migrate to the inner drive shaft, causing it to expand as well, defeating the purpose. Hopefully, the rust isn't too deep in the splines (on either end) and she'll break free and slide off. I guess it goes without saying that this is a good case for yearly removal of the prop. Remove any fishing line wrapped around the driveshaft, clean, relube, install, and replace the cotter pin. Good luck and report back on how things turn out.

You will need a new hub anyway so carefully take a grinder and grind down one side of the hub til you get it almost ground through. Did I mention "CAREFULLY"
Now take a dremel tool and cut it the rest of the way through."CAREFULLY"
Once you get one lengthwise cut, it should come off.

Re: 30 HP jhonson w/pictures

Hi, thats the part, the only other thing that comes to mind is thats not the correct prop for that motor, just guessing though. Without knowing the year of the motor, the mfg. p/n & size/pitch of the prop it would be hard to cross reference.

Mike

Theres another washer that looks like it's missing. It goes on after the prop and is shaped to fit over the splines on the prop shaft. Usually made out of nylon or some similar material.

Hi, there should still be a washer front & back. Like steviecops said it looks like its missing. I can't tell from you're pic above if there's a washer there or if thats part of the prop.

Like I said before you're either missing a prop washer or thats not the right prop for your motor.

Just tyin to help,
Mike :)
