Johnson lower unit repair or replacement

Last Friday I sheared off the propeller shaft and propeller on my Johnson 150hp outboard. I believe the shaft fatigued because I was in 30+ ft of water and no evidence of anything visible that I could have hit. ..still trying to figure it out,. My question is, the marina mechanic says I should replace the complete lower unit vice replace the shaft because salt water got into the lower unit and will pit the gears immediately. There is a significant cost difference that is having me question the need for complete replacement.

Re: Johnson lower unit repair or replacement

A competent technician would first recommend that the lower unit be torn down completely. After which the parts would be cleaned and inspected and a accurate estimate could be made.

At that point, you could decide which route you would want to travel... repair or replace.

What is the model number of your engine. If the propshaft is not available on this website, I have a few propshafts left in my remaining stock that I could discount, but try this site first.

My 1992 150 HP Johnson Model # is either J150NXENC or J150EXENC... not sure which one is the RH. Thanks John
