I have a brand new (was still in crate) 2003 25hp Johnson, tiller and rope start. Broke engine in first 10 hours at 25:1. During the last 2 hours of break in it developed a sneeze or pop (thru the carb) while idling in gear, about every 10 secs or so. Also sneezes upon cold start, then sputters out and is hard to start back. Does this several times until I finally put it in gear and throttle up. Once in gear and running the boat has a single miss off and on. I've searched thru the forum for a while and saw one post that described this as "lean pop". Question is: This motor came to me from a dealer in New Hampshire, I am in Florida on the Gulf coast. Is it possible that the jets are not right for running at sea level? I've tried resetting the mix screw (backed out one-half turn) and it still does it, only not as often.
I've changed plugs with same type Champions and disassembled/cleaned carb. It's still under warranty but the wait at any Johnson repair shop around here is 6 weeks. I appreciate any help in advance. Thanks.

I'm not positive on the setting for the 25 but on my 20hp,the correct setting is 1 1/2 turns out from a lightly seated position. If that doesn't fix it,you might need to do the lynch n synch procedure in your manual.

According to the factory service manual the initial setting is 2 1/2 turns out from lightly seated. This is just a starting point, typically anything +/- up to 1/4 turn is where they end up.

The factory jetting is good from sea-level to 4500 feet above sea-level.

-John

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try what the factory manual states. I've ordered one but it has yet to arrive. Forgot to mention earlier that it only does this when the engine is in the water. Doesn't do it while on the muffs.
