I have a 1979 Evinrude 100 horse that does not have power tilt and trim, (manual). I bought a power tilt and trim assembly off of ebay for the same exact motor, (OMCunit). Will I have any problems putting this on my motor?

Should fit fine if for 1978 thru 1993 outboard. You'll need to remove the tilt latch and the tilt assist shock assemblies. Leave on the tilt support assembly. To install, you will need tilt the motor all the way up, engage the tilt support and then loosen the port motor mount bracket. This will allow you to remove the tilt assist shock assembly and slip in the T&T unit. A helper will make this job a lot easier and safer. You will also want to reinstall the tilt down limit shaft into the lowest position on the motor mount brackets. Did you get the control box and cables for it? If you need help with wiring or testing it we'll just need to know if the tilt motor has 2 or 3 wires. Good luck. Any problems, just let us know.

I also purchased mine off of Ebay. Still going strong after my first full season using it. Sure makes boating much more enjoyable. Saves on the old back also.

Re: WILL POWER TILT FIT?

Im pretty new to boating so bear with me, this is a 3 wire tilt, the boat was a 50 horse johnson with tilt. I left all wiring from that motor connected from controls to motor. I did cut the old wires off of old tilt. What should color code be for three wire?

Green - Down
Blue - Up
Black - Ground (Battery Negative)

How many and what color wires were present on the old tilt? Did the wires to the old tilt go inside the old motor with the other motor cables? We need to find out if you still have the T&T control box or whether you need to obtain or build one.

You can test the T&T before installing on the boat by attaching the black wire to battery negative and then either the green or blue wire to battery positive. Don't be alarmed if you get a big spark when connecting the green and blue wires. This is normal as the motor draws a lot of current. It is also normal for the wires to get a little warm with continued operation.

The boat is down the shore and Im not, so I dont know how many wires the old tilt has. The cable that I cut from the old tilt, went directly to the motor of the tilt unit. Did the cable I cut go to a t&t control box and then to the switch by the throttle?

Re: WILL POWER TILT FIT?

John, you'll need trace the cable inside the boat to see if there is a control box or perhaps just relays somewhere along its length. Just want to make sure you still have this as the switch on the throttle is not capable of handling the load drawn by the T&T motor, particularly in the up direction. I originally purchased a cable assembly on Ebay that had 2 relay sockets attached to the cable without a box, but have since used pieces from it to build my own control box.

If relays or control box is present then just connect you new unit to the appropriate wires cut from the old one. Just be sure to seal the connections well from water intrusion.

Joppe, your kind of stealing someone else's post here, but anyway refer to this post for a link to a wiring diagram posted by SuzukiChopper. Main power supply circuit should be fused for 30amps and a minimum of 12 guage wire should be used in the circuits carrying the load of the motor.

The wires from old unit are the same as the new unit. I hooked it up and woopie it works , but back to the broken bolt!!!

Re: WILL POWER TILT FIT?

Since it snapped at the head then you should I think be able to loosen one of the engine mounting brackets enough to slide the old unit to one side enough to allow the remaining part of the bolt to clear the bracket. Then WD40 or something like it and some vise grips should remove the broken bolt from the old unit if you so desire. May take some heat to remove also.

Glad to hear you got the new unit to work, so the hard part is actually over with.

When you reassemble make sure to use new screws and to grease them before installing. That way they should be easy to remove in the future. I used stainless screws for my unit. You'll get a whole lot of differing opinions for and against doing that it seems, but at least the bolt heads are nice and shiny.

Re: WILL POWER TILT FIT?

Joppe, I have no idea what the wire from the tilt cylinder could be, except that I doubt its for a tach. You need to start your own post as your problem is just going to get lost in this one. It would also no doubt be helpful if you were able to post a picture of your unit or a reference to where we could go to view one like it. Did you perhaps buy it on Ebay?
