Re: johnson

Sounds like it has overheated and froze up a little. Pull the head and check the cylinders. put some 2 cylcle oil in them and try pulling your starter cord to get them lubed up. Might just be dry cylinders from sitting too long. Make sure that you put a new gasket in and don't reuse the old one. I don't have a manual for your engine (but you should), while the head is off check for scoring on the cylinders or pieces of a broken ring. If it pulls fine after lubing do a compression check. Don't know why Xcuseme took his post off because he is pretty good at this stuff. you will get more replies with probably better answers but I would start here. By the way, Welcome to iboats!

Re: johnson

Confusion - RDE18 is a 1956 30 hp. A 1957 35 hp is RDE19, and a 1958 35hp is RDE19C. Makes no difference for troubleshooting, but you might want to check the model before you order a manual or any parts.

Re: johnson

Hmmm...if it's so hard to turn over, how did you check the compression?

Does it turn over easily with the spark plugs out?

Re: johnson

thanks fof the feedback. with the plugs out it turns over easy. ran compression test with second plug out. only could get one revalutionat a time then

Re: johnson

What is the voltage drop across the starter motor when engaged, strouds?

Sounds to me like you may simply have a low resistance blocking full power in your starter high current circuit. A weak battery could do that, too.

Compression testing should be done with all spark plugs removed, BTW.

Re: johnson

OK, then. If it turned over easy enough to get a compression check, then I'd look at your starter. Check all the cable connections carefully, and clean them thoroughly to the point where you have bare metal touching bare metal, from the starter to the solenoid to the battery. Check the ground cable, too. They have a habit of getting funky on those engines.

It's not surprising that it's hard to turn over with the rope. These Big Twins are a little tough to rope start, except when warmed up. I'd focus on getting that starter working.

If it turns freely with the plugs out, you're almost certainly OK with the cylinders, pistons, and bearings.

How long have you had this outboard, and what have you done to it so far. We'll get you going.

Re: johnson

I.ve had the motor for about a year, was given to me . took lower unit apart cleaned full of sand. removed starter checked brushes all seam good. carb clean, removed reeds both ok . used battery that starts my 65 johnson . did they make a decompression unit for that model, they had one on the 18hp johnson that worked off rope starter.

Re: johnson

Well, my 1958 RDS-20 has the compression release heads on it. It helps a little, but it's still a hard pull. I'd focus on the starter you have and do the checking of all the connections. You can also try jumping the starter directly, just to see if it cranks better. If it does, then it's probably bad connections or a bad solenoid.

Starters can go bad for several reasons. Brushes are one, but yours are apparently OK.

Converting to the compression release heads is possible, but once you have a working starter, you won't care.

Re: johnson

There ya go! I knew you'd get it. Now you can go out and try your outboard on the water.
