I need help finding a driveshaft that will work on an LU Im rebuilding. I have no clue on the year being that the power head is a newer model, and there are no numbers on the transom mounts(its been painted white, but used to be green). The drive shaft that I pulled out is an OEM one piece shaft. Its bent, and the splines that go into the pinion gear are wasted, so its pretty much shot. I found the reference numbers for the gears and clutch dog, but I couldnt trace them back to a certain year.

The motor is a Johnson 175HP V6
-----------------OEM# SIERRA#
FWD gear ----------------- 18-2211
RVRS gear 910211 18-2212
clutch dog 910198 18-2213

driveshaft 394615 0894

Ive purchased a nice used complete gear set that is the exact OEM gears that I removed.

All I need now is a driveshaft. Can anyone cross reference this number for me to find out what year it is, or atleast what part number I need to look for.
Ive noticed that most new driveshafts are sold in two pieces, is this how they are supposed to be replaced. Did they change it so you dont have to replace the entire shaft if the lower shaft goes out, etc..? Thanks for any help.

Re: need help finding driveshaft

You need an OEM shop manual. There's a freeze plug on the aft upper part of the PH which will ID the PH. Once you have that nailed there are a number of places like Twin City Outboards who have drive shafts. It will probably help if you measure and photogrph the existing shaft, since a lot of sellers have lots of drive shafts removed from motors, but w/o p/n's. Also, count the splines at the crankshaft end. BTW, are the crankshaft internal splines OK?

Re: need help finding driveshaft

The problem with checking the freeze plug is that the PH is not the original. Its a black (color) PH that has obviously been placed on an older bottom half. Thats why I cant get any specific year for the LU by finding out what year the PH is. The bottom half was originally green in color, but has been painted white. Duiring that swap/paint job, the ID tag has disappeared. This is not my boat, or motor, just fixing it for a co-worker. He was under the assumption that the motor was a 1994 just like the stratos its mounted on. He was a little disappointed when I showed him the truth.
I also told him about the possibility of the crank splines being ruined due to the bent shaft, but I havent checked them yet. There were no signs of damage on the top splines of the driveshaft, and it wasnt bent badly, just the slightest wobble at the top. It may have bent when the pinion gear broke, so it didnt have time to wipe out the crank splines.
I figured I could trace the year of the LU by having the OEM gear #'s, and the sierra part #'s, but I havent had any luck finding a year match to the sierra #'s.
I'll count the splines and measure the shaft to hopefully help find what will work.

I did notice that alot of motors from 175HP-235HP, years ranging around 1979-1999 pending on what model they are, all use the same forward gear. Yet They use a wide variety of reverse gears and pinion gears. what is the difference in the reverse gears, being that the gear teeth themselves still have to match up to the same forward gear. Are they thicker/thinner? different clutch dawgs? or was the info I read wrong. It showed sierra part # 18-2211 forward gear for a wide range of LU's, but I cant find one single LU that uses the reverse gear sierra # 18-2212 or clutch dawg #18-2213 to reference a year.

Im hoping to scrounge up a used driveshaft for him, being that the only one Ive found matching the OEM # 394615 was $600.00. I think thats rediculous being what good used LU's sell for.

Does anyone know of a place that may have alot of salvage parts? I figure having the OEM number from the DS, it shouldnt be that hard to locate one.

Re: need help finding driveshaft

Hi, if its any help according to my local dealer that part#394615 has been superceded. The new p# is 5000775, he couldn't provide me with a year or range of years that the shaft was used on though.

Mike

Thanks for the info, and I actually did find that 5000775 part number on a website, but it didnt really say anything else about it. I wasnt sure if that was a new number, or that stores stock number. Thats the part that was $600.00 at that website.
I found a few marine salvage places and Ive sent them an email describing the shaft, and the OEM part #. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Re: need help finding driveshaft

Well, I am finally making some progress with this mystery LU. The driveshaft numbers I have cross with a large number of 1980 model V6's. this is good news being that now I actually have a target to look for.
I have a salvage yard checking on it for me tomarrow, so hopefully they will have one.

Thanks for the offer, and thats a great deal on a new driveshaft. A salvage yard I found, had a new one that had been sitting on the shelf for quite a while, and he let it go for $125.00+shipping. My buddy would have been happy to pay $200.00 for yours had I not come across the other one. The cheapest I found for a new one was $400.00.
Thanks again, and you shouldnt have any problem unloading that shaft for that price. It seems that the 20" shafts are a little hard to find used.
