HI all. Total NOOB here so be kind. I have a 1991 60 hp evinrude outboard on a 17ft tracker. For a long time the engine will cut out at high throtle aprox 5000 rpm. It will only cut out for a second and then resume running as normal. The engine does this at random time trough out the day. It run fine at low and mid range.

I have checked fuel lines, gas tank, added new fuel with stablize, replaced plugs, fuel filter.

And today I see water coming out the exhaust? Two holes side by side facing stern.

Any help in this would be greatly appriciated.

Re: engine cut out

Welcome to iboats. We'll be gentle. Sounds like you might have some junk in a high speed jet in the carb. If it has been a while you might consider rebuilding them with a new kit. Do a search on this forum for the details. Plenty of threads on them. Water is supposed to come out of the exhaust relief holes so don't sweat it. There will be more people jumping in with more advice that are actually marine techs and have their own shops. It's great to have pros that donate their time here. See, that wasn't so bad.

Hello Razguel 2.
I do also have an Evinrude 60HP VRO, but from 1990. I did have a lot of trouble with mine.
You are writing, that the motor "cut out". Does that meean, that its like you are turning the ign.key at off ???.
If so, make control at your stop-system (black/yellow wirer at power pack).
But please write a little more, what happens. Does the motor just go down in rpm, or ?????

Re: engine cut out

Thanks for the info. I thought water was supose to go out but just never seen that much lol

FYI this is a 3 cylinder engine

The engine at top speed will cruise fine, then without warning it will stop running engine will not make any sound then in 1 sec will resume running as normal. Will do this periodically through out the day for no apparent reason. Tried to look at rpm and volt meter while this happens but is very difficult because i never can predict when it will happen.

I will research high speed carb rebuild and figure out if it something i can do on my own.

BTW what does WOT stand for.

Keep asking questions and thanks for the help.

Re: engine cut out

Razguel....carb rebuild is relatively simple, but I would highly recommend you buy the service manual for your motor first. It will walk you through it step by step. You can either buy the orginal manufacturer factory service manual or an aftermarket version (Seloc or Clymers). Most recomend the factory manual, but any of them will be helpful (I own both!). You can buy an aftermarket one right here at iboats.

Although a complete carb rebuild is definitely a good idea, you can try just checking the high speed jets for a slight clog. Again the manual would be helpful here.

Good luck!

Re: engine cut out

The more i look at it the more i am convinced the problem is electrical not fuel. There are two yellow wires that lead to connection marked 1 &2 that are brown they come from a round metal part mounted on the side of the motor. Right side of motor.

I will go buy a manuel that will help alot.

Keep the suggestions coming

Hello Razguel2.
I agree.
Your problem looks like electrical.
And Im 90% sure, its in your "kill" system (ign.switch).
If you disconnect the black/yellow wirer at your power pack, then you are disconnecting the whole kill system. (you cant stop the motor by the key). But please get a manual, before you are "playing" with your motor.

Hi Razguel2,

this link will show you a diagram & parts list for your year/hp motor,

http://www.ishopmarine.com/ishop/js...~A0000022~M0015034~M0015154~M0015157~C0289665

I beleive the round part you referred to is the rectifier, the 2 yellow wires connect to terminals 1 & 2 on the terminal block.

There are many other diagrams, parts lists on this site, be sure to use the correct model # for your motor as there were 6 for that year.

Great choice on getting the manual.

Good luck,
Mike :)

Re: engine cut out

Sounds like you have an intermittent fault in your ignition system. Check out your kill circuit first as suggested by others. If you disconnect the black/yellow wire at the powerpack end and the problem goes away, you have an intermittent fault somewhere in your ignition switch, kill switch or ignition switch wiring harness. You won't be able to turn the motor off but choke it until it dies.

Check out the following site for a troubleshooting guide (a lot of this is reprinted from the Rapair troubleshooting guide which can be downloaded from www.rapair.com)

http://www.boatpartstore.com/tips.asp

Re: engine cut out

if i disconnect the black and yellow wires will i be able to start the engine via the ignition key?

Also the ignition was replaced last year. I am not certian that the kill switch was replaced.

These are two totally serperate switches(kill switch and ignition key) right?

I also read in the another site that a bad rectifer could cause these syptoms as well and that i could disconnect the retifier and see if the problem goes away? does this make sense?

thanks for the input guys.

Re: engine cut out

Yes you will still be able to start the engine but you won't be able to turn it off!

Two switches. Kill switch is the one the saftey lanyard is attached to.

A bad rectifier will mean your battery won't be charging but I doubt it will cause your intermittent problem.

Sounds like you are losing spark to all cylinders. If you're kill circuit isn't the problem could be a powerpack problem.
