Restoration Help!

I have my dad's 1937 Johnson Model 200 and I wish to restore it. I found it in pieces in a box so this will definitely be a task. <br />I need to clean and free up the engine parts. I want to do this with minimal damage..... <br />Can anyone suggest what cleaning fluid or agent to use?

I'd probably free stuck parts with PB Blaster or penetrating oil. there's another site that deals specifically with old outboards - aomci.org

Hi David, Welcome to the forum.<br /><br />Can you post the model # serial # for your motor.<br /><br />The reason I ask is that when locating parts, paint, decals as well as general info, etc.<br /><br />The model # you provided doesn't match up to any motor that Johnson or Evinrude made in 1937 or any other year.<br /><br />It may be difficult to locate since you say its all in peices but its worth a shot.<br /><br />Good Luck,<br />Mike

The model number is 200 - it's a 1936 model year.... It is an opposed 2-cylinder of about 3.3hp.<br /><br />There are several links off the AOMCI.org site's links page that can get you parts manuals, service manuals, etc. for your motor...<br />- Scott

Thanks Boatbouy, I will take that advice. <br /><br />I agree chainwlker, this is interesting. The model is 200 and the serial number is 231668 which based on my research suggest 1937. Is this a "one of a kind" or what?<br />Thanks for the links MCM, I'm sure I'll use them. I will need paint and probably decals. <br /><br />Thanks folks, I'm sure I will need more assistance.

The 1937 version was the model 210, David. The model 200 was built for 1936.<br /><br />Good luck.

There is much "overlap" of serial numbers vs. years in that era and paperwork was sometimes fudged accordingly. It was the height of the Great Depression and they sold motors whatever way they could. If there were some leftover 1936 model 200s they may have been sold as 1937s prior to a dealer being able to order the new 210s. Not uncommon practice and it may explain the discrepancies in serial number lists...<br /><br />- Scott
