I have a 35hp Johnson that will idle for a while, then just flat out die suddenly. No sputtering or anything it just shuts off. After it is off it will not even fire. I just had the carb rebuilt and have fresh gas and oil in it so I don't think it is a fuel problem, but who knows. Also I noticed some sludge coming out of the prop area after I pulled it off the water today. Not sure if it is related. Could the power pack be flakey? Thanks in advance.

What year? Post a Model and Serial number.

The ignition systems vary for those engines.

When it dies and will not restart check for spark. Could be a coil breaking down under heat after it warms up. The sludge is just unburnt fuel coming out your thru hub exhaust. I am at this point assuming that you do have thru hub. If you have spark and it's good bright blue spark then suspect a leak in a fuel line, bad fuel pump, stuck float, or other fuel related problem.

Perhaps your trying to idel to slow. Should be setup to idel about 750 or so.

On the muffs about 850 to 900.

Good luck!
