I have a 1955 Evinrude Fastwin and need a manual.

The Seloc manual is for 1956-1978(?)- will this manual be helpful for my 1955?

Where might I find one for my 1955?

Why do so few manuals deal with the exhaust housing, lower motor cover, and assorted stuff such as tiller handle, shift levers, how top of shift mechanism works, etc? Most manuals deal with carbs, ignition, power head, lower unit and peripherals not dealt with.

Re: Repair manual questions

Because the generic service manuals cover so many years in one book, there isn't room to put in the maint for the areas you described. OEM manuals are the only way to go if your going to do your own service work. The OEM manual gives you specific info on your engine. There are several places you can get reprints of the OEM service manuals. Do a search for Ken Cook Co., marine.com or the outboardwizard. The OEMs cost a little more but they pay for their selves in no time.

Re: Repair manual questions

OMC made that basic motor for years. The Ign, carb, gearcase, powerhead, and water pump are all the same, along with most all adjustments, Any manual on the 18, 20, 25 will see you through. The first change on these engines would be the low tension ign, in about the early 70's, but even the points on that are adjusted the same.

Re: Repair manual questions

OBJ, TYVM for your good words. I have a Seloc manual and Johnson Motors Service Manual bought for work on my 6hp Johnson, and a Clymer for my 1955 Evinrude. None of them show much about the upper end of the gear shift mechanism. Am having problems with the shift lever and the shift shaft adjustere behind it which broke. Is that back up piece removable from the shaft or is it all one piece?

Again many thanks to all of you. This forum is awesome.

Re: Repair manual questions

Don't forget here that the '55 Fastwin uses the 19.94 CID engine which is totally different from the '57- 22.0 CID engine. Seloc doesn't even have a pic of that block in their '56- manual, just the specifications.

Exploded diagrams & complete parts lists are in the factory parts manual (kencook.com, maxrules.com theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com, marineengine.com). If you want to save a couple bucks on the factory service manual you can get it on CD from acmeoutboards.com.

Every thong but the engine hood will inter-change.
