I am new to the forum and to outboards larger than sailboat kicker motor so be gentle. I have a lot more questions but I work on this one step at a time.

I recently bought a 75 Dixie tri-hull with this 115 115 Evinrude. Probably the original motor. I have already bought a real service and parts manual from Ken Cook and also have a "catch-all" manual that came with the boat.

The prop shaft was bent with about .060 runout forward of the spline. I have purchased and installed a 1974/115 lower unit with about .003 runout. Life is good, vibration is gone and picked up about 5 mph. Still only about 28 mph with a GPS and speedo with surging at full throttle. These are problems to deal with in later questions.

The manual calls for the use of a specific OMC gearcase lubricant and if this is not available use DEXRON ATF fluid. The fluid drained from the original unit appeared similar to ATF and the fluid from the replacement looks similar to normal marine gearcase lube. I refilled the replacemnt with CASTROL Marine Gear lube 85/90.

Is this acceptable or will the thicker lube cause problems with the oil pump for the lower end and cause loss of RPM/speed?

The tach in the boat appears to be in poor working condition and is next on the list of replacement parts before getting into the lack of speed. Any suggestions for a tach would be appreciated. Diameter/color of tach not an issue.

Thanks in advance

Brent

Re: 1975 Evinrude 115 Lower Unit Grease

Welcome Brent, My manual for my '75 50hp recommended the same thing, that said I've had no problems using the marine gear lube, its what appeared to be in it when I got the motor and its what the local shops recommended.

The performance of the tach on the other hand could be an indication of a charging system problem such as a bad rectifier. There are some tests that can be done to check this with an ohm meter, the manual should explain how.

Again welcome to the forum :D

Thanks MCM. I've read the troubleshooting info in the manual and on this forum re: tachs and rectifiers, etc. I plan to do some testing before I spend real money. The tack looks like original equipment and the lens is all cracked an UV damaged. Brent
