I have the 87' model.....a friend of mine has the 85'. I love mine. To me they seem very dependable and bulletproof. Starts on the second pull cold, the first pull after that.....runs smooth. Thats just my expirience. I'd wait and see what some of the experts in this forum have to say

well my thinking is as such if i have say 600 or even 800 dollars invested in a 25 horse motorof that year i think i am further ahead because one price a new one , and if the job is done correct i figure i will have a new one maybe better than new because nothing on those motors are plastic like the new ones. and if i do a complete rebuild wouldnt you say i have a new motor? less the cost of one today

to do a complete rebuild you will need at a minimum, 4 rodbolts,1 lower crank bearing, seals surface the head, new water deflectors, new exhaust divider plate if the original is cast AL. bore two cyl, new pistons, rings wristpins, pin bearings, rod bearings. waterpump kit and possibly a reseal on the lower, new t-stat ,new fuel pump and a carb kit. last 35 I did, about the same as your 25, set me back about 800 in parts and machine work. motor was totally reconditioned and is still running on a cousins boat and that was back in 97. new main bearings would be nice but not nessasary if the originals are in good shape. as long as the motor shows minimal to no corrosion it may be worth a recondition. conversion to elec start is easy on that motor as well.

Re: 1984 johnson 25 horse

thanks for the figure i thought about 800.00 i just sat here and looked at complete rebuild kits for 500 but i would have to add a few things because if i do this i want everything new even if it goes to a thousand dollars i figure i am still way ahead because of price of a new motor that would not last near as long as the one i am thinking of rebuilding in fact several mechanics 4 to be exact have told me to rebuild older motors as the new ones are junk whats your opinion?

Re: 1984 johnson 25 horse

depends on your skill level. I tend to stay away from kits as some contain or dont contain things I will need or not need. alaways replace the lower main and rodbolts. sometimes the rod bearings can be reused, the piston to wall clearence, finnish hone pattern and port chamfering will be more important than most all else.. second to that is the wristpin and bearing. never reuse the wristpin clips.<br /> done properly to a low corrosion motor a rebuild will go as long as a new one. but it must be a rebuild not a patch. first thing to do is to dissasemble everything including the lower unit and asses what ya have and what you will need. new reeds are cheap insurance as well.
