I do not understand terminal #1 on the powerpack.
With a needle volt meter I get 0 volts from the disconnected Black/Yellow to ground with the key on or off. When using a digital meter I get 1.45 volts with the key on and 0 volts with the key off.

Is this a problem? Does the switch need to be replaced?

What is the purpose of Terminal #1. I know it goes to the key switch. Is terminal #1 sending power to the key switch once the motor is running? Why?

Thank you,

KM, is there a particular reason you're checking your power pack

Yes,
I am have no spark on Cyl. #2 and #3. If I switch the terms on the powerpack then #1 and #4 have no spark. I know my powerpack is bad but I DO NOT want to blow the new one I am installing so I am trouble shooting the rest of the ing. system. I do not want a faulty ing. switch sending power to the #1 powerpack terminal as I know that can be a problem.

I have also replace all the ing. coils because they have large cracks in the plastic housings.

I also had a bad rectifier which is being replaced.

Thank you,
Kemper

As Joe Reeves said before (your earlier thread) , when the engine is not running, there should not be any voltage.
Do the tests and look for shorts. Good luck.

One other thought is that if the rectifier is burned, the current could be coming back through it.

Try disconnecting the rectifier and check for voltage again.

Yes I know I need to do the tests and I have. My question is what is Term #1 on the Powerpack for. The manual does not make this clear. I have have searched and searched.

So again my main question is what is the purpose of #1 on the powerpack?

Thank you,

Joe Reeves
Captain
Member # 6826

- posted November 06, 2005 06:59 AM Profile for Joe Reeves Edit/Delete Post Reply With Quote The usual cause of having those type powerpacks fail repeatedly is having a very small of voltage applied to the Black/Yellow wire at the pack. Test as follows.

Disconnect the Black/Yellow wire at the powerpack.

Insert either a ampere meter or a volt meter set to its lowest DC voltage reading between that Black Yellow wire and ground.

With the ignition key in the OFF position, observe the meter reading. Now turn the ignition key to the ON position and again observe the meter reading.

Any reading, movement of the meter needle, would indicate that battery voltage is being applied to that Black/Yellow wire. If a reading is present, remove the other end of that Black/Yellow from the raised terminal of the ignition switch.

If the reading ceases to exist when the Black/Yellow wire is removed from the ignition switch, replace the switch. If the reading continues to exist, there would be a short of some kind in either the engine or instrument wiring harness.... to determine which, simply unplug the large RED electrical plug at the engine which would eliminate the instrument cable.

--------------------
ReevesJ32@aol.com

30+ Years With OMC

Seems pretty straight forward

I did remove the rectifier and it only reduced the voltage from 1.45 to .60. on the digital meter with the rectifier removed. The analog meter reads ZERO. When testing a 1.5 volt AA battery with the analog meter it reads 100% correct so I know my analog meter is working and when this is with it set at 2.5 DC volt setting.

I am thinking that in the past I have had these types of problems with digital meters.

How come no one is really reading what I am asking. I have done all the tests that "Joe Reeves" and the manual have said to do.

I am just simply asking what is the purpose of #1 terminal on the powerpack.

Well it probably depends on the p/pack (there are svereral). What color coded wire connects to your #1 terminal?

The Black/Yellow wire grounds the power pack when you turn the key to off, thus shutting down the motor.

GREAT - Thank you!
Now I can test the switch in a better manner to try to eliminate why the digital meter is showing 1.45 volts and the analog is showing zero.

With the #1 term. disconnected at the powerpack I will apply 12v to the switch thus changing my readings at the other end. Both the analog and digital should read the same. If there is short to gound I will know that as well from the sparks or blow fuse.
