I have an issue with my "no oil" alarm that I am trying to resolve. The motor is a 1998 200hp carbed Johnson. After running the motor for about 10 minutes the "no oil" light will activate and the horn will sound for 10 - 20 seconds. The VRO is new and functioned fine for about 10 hours. The tach with System Check is also new. I have confirmed that the VRO is functioning and I think it is just an alarm issue. I also swapped the alarm sensor (the module with the four wires) with the unit from my older VRO. This did not change anything.
Any suggestions for my next step. Thanks in advavce for you assistance.

Dear Striped,
Consider going back to the home page and look under "oil injection". Your motor is larger than my 70 hp evinrude, but I have a similair problem. At the topic "oil injection" there are others who have similiar problems with engines your size. Maybe they can help. sauger man.

Try disconnect the alarm wirer to your VRO oil tank (at the motor), and make a test run.
If now alarm, then control the disconnected alarm wirer, that it is not grounded some where. If not any ground, then dismantle the alarm system in the oil tank. Then the fault must be there.
Let us know the result.

Re: 1998 Johnson Alarm Problem

Tha alarm that is sounding is the "No Oil" alarm. The "Low Oil" alarm seems to be functioning normally and I don't believe the two circuits are connected.
Also, the VRO seems to be functioning fine and if I hadn't swapped out the 4 wire oil sensor, I would have thought that was the problem.
I have been trying to resolve this with the search function but have not found the answer in earlier posts. Any help would be appreciated.

Check to make sure you haven't got a kink or some other issue with the oil line itself, this seems to have been an issue in an older post I found

Re: 1998 Johnson Alarm Problem

MCM,
I just verified pump flow with a clear plastic tube attached to the oil intake fitting. It is taking the appropriate amount of oil and this tube was a straight shot with no restrictions. THe alarm still sounded within several minutes of starting.
Any other suggestions? I'm running out of ideas.

Re: 1998 Johnson Alarm Problem

Have you got the OEM service/shop manual for that motor? if not you need to get it. A Clymer/Seloc manual isn't specific enough to your motor.

There are daily posts on the forum of similar problems of one kind or another. The vro system seems to be plaqued with problems. which is why many choose to bypass it and premix their fuel. It seems that most issues have to do with the electronics, sensors, swithes and such. If you type "vro" into the search feature at the top of the page and select the subject only option, ther are 15 pages with 20 post per page. the one I mentioned was just 1.

You need to troubleshoot the system, you've obviously got a faulty sensor, switch or???

Another alternative is to bypass the system and premix, here is a very good artticle that may give some answers I hope. web page

Re: 1998 Johnson Alarm Problem

Well now I've ruled out the system check gauge. I was able to borrow a new gauge which gave the same results. I have to believe I'm running out of things to be checked.
MCM, good suggestions with the previous posts. Unfortunately, although they have the same problem, the solutions were never posted.
I'm almost ready to pre-mix if I can't resolve this.

True they weren't, often when someone fixes the problem they don't post back  , where is your horn located? is it a seperate part. I don't have a manual or wiring diag. for your motor but it sounds like a likely culprit if you can check it.

Also premixing is much more reliable than trusting to bells and whistles IMO ;)

Re: 1998 Johnson Alarm Problem

The horn is seperate. The horn and warning light are activating and then the horn stops after 10 seconds and the "no oil" light stays lit. I believe the Tach w/ System Check activates the horn. I swapped the Tach with a spare and same thing occurs which leads me to believe it is not the System Check Tach causing the fault. I will try disconnecting the horn.
