I recently bought a !989 year mod. 88special Johnson powered bass boat. In checking out the motor I found 3 cyls at 130 psi and one cyl at 140 psi compression ,after changing lower unit grease and flushing fuel system, I took it to lake for test. runs great, idles good , trolls at 3.5 mph no oil stain on water, verry little smoke. But we were on lake 2 hrs, maby 20 minutes fishing (motor stoped) rest of time boat running ,maby 1 hr tops wot. It burnt 11 gals fuel. is this normal. thanks for any input

I have the same motor. Yes, it loves the gas; however, it is bullet proof. Great Motor

I have same motor - 1992 vintage. My usual trip is about 10 nautical miles (about 11.5 land miles) from launch to fishing hole offshore in Gulf of Mexico in 2 to 4 foot seas. I never run WOT. Crusing speed is typically 15 knots outbound and 22 knots inbound. It usually takes about 10 gallons per trip or about 2 gallons per NM.

On flat water at crusing speed of about 30 knots I get about 3 gallons per NM.

Of course, this depends on your boat hull configuration, too. My boat is a Scout 172 Sportfish.

TD_Maker is right this motor is "bullet proof" and it's never let me down. I never had any major problems other than trim relay. However, I did replace both carb bowls. My originals were plastic and one developed small crack near main jet cover screw. Johnson now recommends replacing bowls with the newer metal ones.

Prop it for 5800 at WOT with a normal load and at cruise you will have the best possible fuel milage.

Hello,

I have an Evinrude 88 Horsepower SPL 1989 V-4 model that likes to drink the fuel also. I was thinking the same thing today myself. I was reading one of these forums and there is a formula you use to figure it out. You multiply your horsepower by 0.1 and divide by the number of gallon tank you have and that will tell you your mph at WOT. So basically you divide 8.8 by 11 gallons which is the size of the tank I have and you get 8 gallons burned per hour.
