I have a 1996 johnson fast strike 150. My trim motor sounds like it is going bad. really weak on the way up, but goes down o.k. I started to remove the old motor to get numbers that I can use to order new one, but I can't get the last screw out. It is the one on the back left where there seems to be no way to access it, with out removing outboard.

Re: removing trim motor

if this is a fastrac set up then use the following.
tilt the motor up and set it on the tilt lock, not the trailer lock. remove the cross pin from the top of the tilt ram. trim it backdown. be careful as it may try to overbalance and the powerhead can fall into the splashwell.
now remove the trim motor wiring and pull it back through the bracket, this usually requires removal of the trim sender on the port bracket.
now remove the circlip from the lowwer cross pin and remove the trim position bar from the bracket after noting which hole its in. once the lower cross pin is removed the unit can be rocked out from between the brackets. installation is pretty much a reversal of removal.

if its a standard OMC unit tilt it up and lock it. remove the tilt ram cross pin and trim it back down. remove the motor wiring and pull it back through the bracket. then remove the 6 bolts,3 on each side and rock the unit aft and up slightly.
while there are many ways to id the units a quick way is if the trim motor has 4 bolts and a square base its a showa fastrac unit. if it has 3 bolts and a triangular base its the standard OMC unit. I cant remember exactly when they changed and certain models did not change.
