what would cause the red wire on the rectifier to desintagrate. replace started 1st try, don't want to burn andthing esle up.

A couple of possibles that come to mind would be age, shorting to ground against the block caused by cracked/frayed wire insulation, reversed polarity from battery (accidental of course) etc.

If the wire insulation simply fell apart, that would be due to inferior insulation.<br /><br />If the wiring was burnt and melted, etc, that would be due to either a loose connection, the rectifier not bolted securely, or reverse polarity at one time which would short out the rectifier.<br /><br />Reverse polarity would result by hooking up a battery or battery charger backwards momentarily (even for a split second), or wiring in some accessory in a manner that would throw reverse polarity to the charging circuit (it happens).<br /><br />Easy enought to check the polarity with a volt meter at the red wire of the rectifier.
