Re: 9.5 Evinrude Flywheel/coil clearance
Welcome to Iboats, cbotzum!

You set the coils so the laminations are flush with the machined bosses they sit on. This leaves about a 0.010" gap between the coil and the flywheel magnet. If the armature plate (the casting on which the coils sit) is excessively wobbly, there's a fairly simple fix for that.

You should really get a service manual if you can. It'll tell you helpful things like the flywheel nut torque is 40-45ft/lbs.

You can get a factory service manual printed from marineengine.com, maxrules.com, etc. They turn up on ebay all the time too. Use the following search terms:
(9.5, 9.5hp) (evinrude, johnson) manual 1972
(Johnson & evinrude are identical for any given year excepet paint & decals)
If you're unwilling to buy one, you can often borrow an aftermarket manual from the local library.

Good luck!

EDIT: Dang fast typers. I guess I shouldn't be so wordy (or is that preachy?

)
