Hi all!

I'm new to this board. Yes, I tried to search this site for similar problems but.. So here goes, (sorry for the long post):

Engine: -98 Evinrude 90 Ficht

Printout from Ficht Software 1.42:
-------------------------------------
Engine Model No E90FPLEEC
Engine Serial No 4643168
Hard Service Codes None
Intermittent Codes 12, 14
ECU Serial 10302
Software Version 3030130
Software PCN 15929
Engine Hours 109
Break-in Hours 5
ECU On Time 0:25
Air Temp 6 C
Engine Temp 6 C
ECU Temp 10 C
TPS Calibrated 0%
TPS Actual 0.52 V
In S.L.O.W. The two intermittent codes (12 and 14) occured already at 51 engine hours.)

The engine has always been a bit slow on top rpm, never really reaching the promised 5700+ top speed, though I changed to a smaller propeller. Specially this summer it hardly reached 5000 rpm anymore.

But as I was winterizing it this fall everything changed. Had not used the boat for two months and the engine was tilted out of the water. The air was a few degrees below zero and the lake, still open, but about to freeze up. Tilted the engine down and started it up for a final spin on the lake, just to warm up the transmission oil.

Looked back and saw the cooling water coming out from the back of the engine. I let it run a few minutes to warm up, then half throttle for a while and then up to 3/4 full speed. After less than a minute the engine stalled. The rpm just died out to a complete stop over a period of 10-15 seconds even though I instinctively pushed the throttle to full speed. No warning lights. No warning sound. No extra sounds from the engine. Total running time less than 10 minutes.

Tried immediately to start it up, but got such a bad grinding sound that I quickly turned the ignition off. After paddling (sigh!) ten minutes I tried to start the engine a few times and this time it sounded and turned fine, and felt like it would just about to start every time, but every time the starter just quit early and pulled off giving a whining sound. Like the first cylinder would fire but nothing more. Pumping more gas was futile, the line pump was very hard.

The oil supply was Ok. Fuel tank half full, and I had pumped up the pressure in both lines before starting the engine. I've used Ficht-oil all the time. I use 95 octane unleaded gasoline.

After a lot of paddling and cursing, the boat w/ engine is in a warm shop on the farm now and I have found out the following:

The fuel system was quite empty - I could easily pump up a lot of fuel from the tank to he engine. Took off the fuel filters - no water in fuel. The oil line pressure is still high - pump in line does not give in at all.

After checking for error codes I tested the ignition with the Ficht software and all four sparks seemed visually fine. All four injectors sounded ok. Also the oil pump sounded ok.

Then came the setback. Tested the compression and the other cylinders varied between 130-150 psi, but the upper left had only 10-15 psi!!! At this time I notised that the same cylinders spark plug was clean, practically white, compared to the others which were quite covered with black deposit.

While testing for compression I notised the same as on the lake that the electric starter could not keep the engine running for more than two revolutions at a time before letting go and whining away.

I haven't been able to try the cooling system yet.

Before I continue dismantling the engine, is there any other test that I should do while it is still complete? - Any suggestions as to the real problem?

Greetings from Finland,
Marcus

Re: Ficht 90 stalled, no compression

I usually don't respond to the questions on the Ficht engines, because I did not have enough time with them before I retired from full time work. From what you discribe, I am wondering if you may have a freeze crack in your block from sitting in the tilt position.

So I might as well just take the engine apart - I mean, it's obviously a serious problem. A crack in the block would require a new power block?

Before you take anything apart, Let's see what some of the other guy's have to say.

Re: Ficht 90 stalled, no compression

At least pull the head from the low cylinder and take a look at the hole and it's condition. I don't have enough experience with the fichts' either but low compression is low compression no matter what engine it's on. Your description of low rpm's do indicate a malady with the engine and the low compression in the one hole would point to the cause of the low r's.

But sometimes the hard part of the job is finding out what the cause of the problem is and fixing it. What you are seeing (as Mr. D. would say) is the result and not the cause.

Maybe taking a look at the hole and pistion can help point in the direction of the cause.

Thanks, I'll open the left side cylinders head tomorrow. You don't think there are any test to do while the engine is still in one piece?

Marcus - Try to take some pictures when you have it opened up and post them here. That will be a big help to our "experts."
