I have a 93' 150HP that has been the cause of me to loose my religon several times. It is the hardest engine to start I have ever seen. I have replaced the plugs and the first couple of times out I could tell it helped. Everytime i put the boat in the water, if the battery holds up, it takes forever to start.
Also, when it does start there seems to be alot of smoke. It has always done this since I have had the boat (2 yrs).
I would appreciate any input given as to why this engine is so hard to start and smokes so much.
Thanks in advance!

Re: 93' Evinrude 150 questions

Welcome!!

I can assure you its not supposed to be that hard. I've had a couple of those (still have one now) and they are normally a dream to start.

Lets go with the basics. Whats the compression? What spark plugs are you running?

Theres several more things to cover but we gotta know where we're at now for starters (excuse the pun).

Thanks.
Not sure about the plug number, but I replaced them with Champion plug and used the number from the owners manual.
Haven't been able to check compression yet, but once it runs, it runs great.

Re: 93' Evinrude 150 questions

Ok, good. If it idles OK it's probably OK but we need to check that ASAP.

Champions are the right choice for that motor. Keep that in mind. Here's the sequence that works well for starting.

1- Squeeze the bulb until firm. This will pressurize the fuel lines and fill the carb bowls with fuel.

2- Turn the key to the "On" position. Do NOT engage the starter. At this point you'll hear the warning horn "beep" once. Thats the self test mode.

3- Push the key in and count to 8. This opens the primer and allows the fuel thats under pressure (from pumping the bulb) to be released into the intake manifold.

4- Turn the key to the "Start" position to engage the starter. There is no need to advance the throttle.

The motor should start almost immidately. You may have to tap the primer (push in on the key) a couple of times as it warms up.

It will be in "Quick Start" mode and the r's will be up some by themselves. As it warms up the idle will come down. Do not shift it until the idle comes down.

Thanks for the starting sequence. I'll be sure to try that the next trip out.
