1976 35hp Runs....but??

I just bought this manual 35. It starts on the 3rd pull everytime. However, I must put the throttle at high rev, until it warms. When it has run recently, it starts on one compression stroke. The problem is when idling, while picking up/putting out decoys. It has a tendency to either sputter and stall, or speed up in rpm's, on it's own!!! If I wiggle the throttle handle, just enough, it will continue to run ok. I cannot turn the handle ever to complete idle or it will stall. I must keep it around the "start" spot on the handle. Does this motor need a carb rebuild to correct this situation?

I think that is a good place to start.

Also, take a good look at the throttle linkage (cover off) as you twist the throttle.

Not to disagree with DJ, because many times a carb cleaning causes the problem to go away, but I have seen worn points cause an idle problem, the gap is too small, and the motor won't idle. You may want to check the points gap and see what it says. I believe the correct gap should be 20 thou
