I have a 1973 Evinrude 9.5 motor, model #9322B the motor has developed a slight miss. What should be my first point of attack, I have cleaned the carb and replaced the spark plugs. Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Need Help

welcome to iboats!

there are several points of attack actually.....

You have breaker points on your motor, which is simple enough to fool with. You'll have to pull flywheel to get to them. They may need cleaned and the gaps adjusted (not 100% positive what the specs are).

Check the compression on it, a good motor should run at least 100 psi or higher and close together. 90 and up is acceptable though.

You should check the spark too, it should jump 7/16" gap and be bright and snappy. Anything less and motor won't run good, hard to start, and miss. Can be traced to bad coils (which are probably original), condensors, or dirty, out of adjustment points.

There's plenty more to add, I won't hog it all....

Thanks for the input. Replaced condensors and points and taht seems to have solved the problem. Ran motor on flush kit and the miss is gone. $20 fix. Thanks again.

Hey while you had the flywheel off, did you take a gander at the coils? The coils in those older motors tend to develop cracks in them and lose their punch due to leakage.

I just converted my Merc to pointless ignition called Magnatune. Supposed to be pretty reliable, I hope I didn't waste my money on them. I'll find out soon enough.
