I am looking at buying an 87 grady white with twin 200 ocean pros. when we took the boat out with the surveyor the two out side top cylinders ran hot. about 200 deg. the other 10 ran about 100 deg. This boat sat for over a year. the engins are very clean and apear to have never been opened. the compresion before the sea trial was aprox 120 lbs on all cylinders, after the test and while still warm the commpression tests were all aprox 105. both the surveyor and the dealer said it was most likely a thermostat problem. Does this sound right.

Welcome to iboats :)
Very simple fix. All you do is tell the dealer to fix it and then give you a call.

Alden

Thanks for the reply. We had planned to pay for the thermostat change and retest this week. just wanted to hear someone else say this is a most likely fix. we have owned bots all my life but this will be the first offshore boat and I am very excited about the boat. great price and the whole family is excited.

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly. Is this being sold to you by the dealer? Or, is this a private sale and the dealer is just giving advice?

If it's a dealer sale, I don't know why you would be paying to fix it before purchase.(unless you got a price break)

Anyway, I'm not the guy you need for the problem with the cooling, just curious about the sale circumstances.

GW's are nice boats and should you get the engines worked out I'm sure it will be a lot of fun :)

the boat is being sold by an individual. It is at the dealer where it has been stored. the dealer is just assisting with the sale, noncommision courtesy. the seller took severel thousand dollars less than originaly asking. I feel pretty good about the deal and having paid for a survey I dont mind paying a little more for the thermostats to posibbly save thousands more.

I'll bump this back to the top so someone will see your cooling question.

The thermostat job is very easy and inexpensive to do,so get it done (whoever pays) and rewater test.
What worries me is that it was ran with two cyinders @ 200 degrees.Last I knew 163 degrees was over heat.
I'd at least do another compression test and see if 120 psi is still there before another sea trial.I'm worried about piston/cylinder damage.

DHP

I'm wondering how it was determined that the two top cylinders were at 200 degrees.Thermo melt stik?Hand held infrared?
