50hp Johnson stalls. Starved for fuel? **UPDATE**

Hi guys. I've got a 1971 50hp Johnson 2 cylinder that for the past 3 years has run very good. The last 2 times I've taken it out, it will start and run perfectly, then all at once just stall and die. It doesn't bog down and then stall. It's like I just turned the key off. Hmmm. mabey I just answered my own question, the ignition. Anyway, most of the time, after I let the boat settle, I turn the key and it fires right back up like nothing's wrong until the next time it does it. Sometimes it takes a little coaxing to get it started again. <br /><br />Fuel is good, vent is open, bulb is hard and not collapsed. <br /><br />Any ideas? No money to buy a new motor, but I can have this one looked at, mabey rebuilt. I was hoping you guys could give me some ideas. Thanks a bunch!

Could be a hot failure in the powerpack, DR.<br /><br />Fire her up on the muffs and put a hairdryer on the powerpack. If she dies let her cool down and try again.<br /><br />Good luck.

I'll try that JB. That would be good news, I think I can change a powerpack. It makes sense what you say given the symptoms. Thanks. I'll let you know what happens.

DR, i've been having the same problem with a 73 50 Rude. i have power pack ordered. let me know how you make out.

not to jump your thread, but installed new power pack today, not difference will run on bottom plug, but dies when top is pulled, reversed coils, same, compression same on both cylinders.starter 1st try, carbs rebuilt at shop. i'm lost.

Tashasdaddy.....swap the leads from the timer base to the power pack. If the problem reverses cylinders, timer base is bad. Don't try to run the engine like this.....just test the spark. Leads should be marked on the pack as "sensor".

spark appears to be good, just seams like it is missing on top. spark jump 3/4 ". pull top rpms drop put back they pick up. pull bottom runs 5 secconds and quits. also while rinning wot after about 10min just quits like you killed the elect. have not tried with new power pack. not running hot.

JB, finally got the chance to test the boat since replacing the power pack and you were right on! Runs like a top again. 35 year old motor still running great. Unreal. Thanks for the help, you saved me some $$ and aggravation.

Where did you get the power pack? I have a 1970 60 HP Johnson that needs one. Or do you know how to convert it to an automotive style starting set up?<br />Thanks

Glassmate, I got it from a local dealer. Valley Marine in Glendale, AZ. It's in the Yellow Pages. They have everything you need, just a little pricey.
