old Johnson tank ??

I have an old Johnson seahorse. It is a 10 horse. I think it is an early 50's model. Engine runs great and I hope to use it for years to come. My problem is with the fuel tank. It has the thumb pump up air cylinder. It will pump and work. The problem is that when I am out in the boat fishing for a few hours in the sun, the top around the top assembly starts to leak and form bubbles around it. Does anyone know if I could still find a gasket rebuild type kit for this or is there another way to seal it. Someone has tried to use silicon on the top sometime years ago. I have never had it apart, but there is rtv around the top plate.

The gaskets are still available Ghost Rider, from John/Rude dealers. You need to replace the gasket and get rid of the RTV around the top. RTV will not hold up against fuel. If you need to use anything, use just a light coat of gasket sealing compound on the gasket. The gasket is cork.

if you can't find one. do it the old fashion way. go to the autoparts store and buy a piece of cork gasket material. take and razor knife and make one. back in the old days thats how we did it. i even made a gasket out of tar paper for an emergency.
