Re: engine wont turn over

take a jumper cable go from pos battery to pos post on starter. if this works, back up to solenoid, jump both large connections. if this works, could be faulty soleniod, connections. unplug large red plug make sure all contacts and clean, both male and female. could be failed ignition switch.

Hi, Johnny.

Starter electrical troubleshooting is covered in the Engine FAQ on "Outboard wont start".

Check it out before you start buying and replacing parts. It should save you some time and bux.

Good luck :)

Re: engine wont turn over

the big red plug is where all the wiring connects together. the most important connection. if you have a volt/ohm meter or can borrow on check the terminals on the ignition switch, if not jump them. if you have a manual check out the wiring diagram, if not go to the library, some have the manual you can photo copy.

Re: engine wont turn over

at last i was able to get to the boat i managed to jump the starter and it was but when i took it apart there was no springs under the brushes so we replaced these but when i tested it off the boat on some jump leads all it seem to do was\spin is this right ? or does it need to be connected to the engine for the cog to rise?

the starter pinion gear is on a "threaded" shaft, I think the term is called a "bendix". is the spring under the pinion there? it doesn't have to be mounted to engine to work.

Re: engine wont turn over

So, you have a new solenoid, the starter works just not when connected to the motor! That would kind of narrow it down to a faulty ign. switch, wiring harness, or it could even be corrosion in the battery cables.

Disconnect the large red plug on the engine harness, also disconnect the fuel connection/source to prevent the motor from starting since with the plug disconnected you wont have the key to turn it off.

Now take a 12 or 14 gauge wire and connect it between the the solenoid post from the battery and the smaller post with what should be the white neutral safety switch wire. Does the motor crank now? if yes then the problem is most likely either the ign. switch or the harness, if the solenoid still just clicks, peel back some of the insulation on the battery cables where they connect at the battery. If the wire is turning green replace them.

Post back with any results and Good Luck :)

Re: engine wont turn over

ello mcm got to the boat today checked allthe wires couldnt find anything then i moved the solonoid and a wire snapped off so i replaced it and guess what the engine started the wiremust have been rotten but when the engine warmed up it cut out any idea what caused this?ps when we started the engine i had to use my car battery because the boat battery wasnt strong enough and the engine still ran with the boat leads off would this make any difference?

If you are saying that the engine was running with the battery cable(s), disconnected you probably have fried the rectifier. Or was I reading that wrong?

Re: engine wont turn over

It will run, it just won't charge. Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running and without. You should have at least 13.5 to 14.5 volts with the engine running. If there is no difference in voltage, the system isn't charging and the rectifier is probably spent.
