I have a 1991 Evinrude 40hp tiller.The problem
I'm having is when I tilt the motor down I get
a popping sound. After I bottom out the motor
and keep the tilt button depressed,I will do
this a few times. Then I will do the same by
tilting the motor up and keeping the button
depressed a few times as well. After I've done
this the popping sound will disappear. But It
keeps coming back after awhile.
I've checked the fluid level and it is topped
off.Does anybody have any clue as to what this
might be?

sounds like the tilt pins are starting to bind, remove them clean & grease them & reinstall..

Let me know if this works for you. I have a 89 40hp that does the same thing. I tried greasing everything on mine and it didn't help. If it works on yours I'll try mine again.

muskrat,
I checked out a service manual from the
library but it is really vague. How do
you take out the tilt pin? Is it the
pin that is on the top of the trim unit?
Could you give me a few pointers! It
would be much appreciated :D

You'll have to raise the engine all the way up to access the pin. It's the pin that holds the ram to the engine. If you remove it, you will have to support the engine in the up position.

Have you shot some grease into the two grease fittings that are on the top front of the transom brackets?
