I purchased a used '76 85hp Evinrude with controls and was wondering how to hook it up. The throttle and shift control cables are there but for some reason the guy cut the bundle of wires that go into the control box. This is a side mount type with a tilt/trim button on the side of the shift/throttle lever.

The 4 prong connector wire comming from the side of the hydrolic pump of the tilt/trim, Does this connect to the motor? I can't seem to find the place where it connects.

Thanks
John

Welcome John!

Do you still have the rest of the wire harness coming from the engine? If so, you will have to splice the wires back together. The fellow should have pulled the large red plug apart under the engine hood. This is the wire harness that goes to the control box.

Did you also get a smaller black box? This is for the Trim and Tilt. The connector your speaking of will mate to another plug in the box.

I would be looking for a service manual to help you out. The OEM manuals will give you colored schematics of your engine. The aftermarkets give shcematics but in black and white....sometimes hard to follow.

You can get OEM manuals from Ken Cook Co., ishopmarine or mastertech. They all have sites. Just do a search.

You can get aftermarket manuals from right here on iboats...see the icon at the bottom of the page.

In the mean time, below is the link for BRP (old OMC). Just click the engine diagrams and follow the prompts. You can get a look at your TNT parts breakdown including electrical.

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/

Re: 1976 85hp Evinrude 85699 Questions

Thanks!

I guess I am missing the black box part. All I have is the control box. The red plug is plugged in the motor (under the cowling) and the wire cable (black plastic PVC coating) is all there. Guess he couldn't or wouldn't take the time to do it right and just unplug it to remove the motor. The guy I bought it from said it was all there, but being new to boats and boat motors I didn't know what to look for.

I bought a Seloc '73-'91 repair manual on iboats for this motor, but there is not too much about hooking up the steering or tilt trim box, other than repair.

Here is a picture of the boat, I will have some pics of the motor up tommorrow.

Boat Project

Thanks again!

Oh, yeah, what is the "black box" called? Once the plug from the tilt/trim motor/pump is plugged into this box, where does it what does it plug into? I do have a switch on the control box for the tilt/trim.

Thanks!

OBJ, wouldn't his TNT wire into a solenoid similar to the one mounted on motor for starter? My '77 has one, although I've had to rig it since all connectors had been cut off. I hate it when others think the easy way is to just cut away instead of doing it right.

I found some solenoids here on iBoats, but they don't seem to have any of the juction boxes for sale. I found an OMC one on eBay and I hope that it will work. iBoats does sale the relay and selenoids, but I don't know which ones to get! Thanks!

John

Sorry for all the questions, the book I bought doesn't show how to hook all this stuff up, just how to work on it if something is wrong.

If you get a factory manual it will tell you everyhting. It even includes wiring schematics.

John, the relays will work if you have a two wire trim motor. (Actually they'll work a 3 wire motor but its slightly tricky)

Re: 1976 85hp Evinrude 85699 Questions

According to the Seloc manual, this motor has the Prestolite pump/motor. There are 3 thick Guage wires (RED, BLACK, GREEN) inside the jacket, with a smaller BLACK 16 Guage wire running along the outside of the "cable", so is this a three wire cable or a four wire?

The connector is square, with 4 prongs inside.

Thanks for all the help. I should be able to order a factory manual on Monday.

There were four wires on the plug.

The pump had three wires: red, blue and black 12 GA; the trim cylinder sender had one black 16 GA.

Re: 1976 85hp Evinrude 85699 Questions

Good idea to order the manual John. I would also see the fellow ya' got the engine from and see if he still got the TNT box. You can wire in a solenoid as suggested by Mikey, but having the box is a lot easier.

Just looking at the project.....I would get rid of that steering system and revise it to tilt tube steering. Steering systems are resonable for the whole thing....helm and all. You just add the steering wheel and you would need a steering link.

Tilt tube steering? Sorry, I REALLY new to boats so I guess I don't know what you are talking about.

I guess I may have to do something with the steering, the old cable attached to the motor (looks like the guy cut that too!) is on the outside of the transom and the one on the boat is on the inside.

Thanks for all your help. I know I am asking a lot of questions that are probably in the manual, but I can't get one right now and was wondering what I need to make this work.

I got the OM owners manual in the mail yesterday.

I understand now what you are saying about the "tilt tube steering". The motor has the tilt tube steering on it, although the guy cut the cable.
