Hi Folks,

I have a 1984 Johnson 15 HP (model J15RCRM), Took it out today and couldn't get it started. It appears to be flooded, but never had this problem befor.

History:
I've had this motor for 6 months, never had any problems. Took it out two weeks ago, when I got back I flush (water)the system but didn't run all the gas out of the carburator.

Afetr trying to start it today I got a lot of oil that leak from the prop area, it looks like gas/oil. Not sure if I blew something inside, but it turns over OK.

I haven't rebuilt the carburator, I assumed it was OK because shw ran great.
Any Idea's?

Jerry

did you check for spark?, is the gas primer bulb arrow pointing toward the motor (common mistake). do you know any maint. history of this motor. DO NOT use starter spray to try to start it. did you pump the bulb up firm.. give us some more details.

Spark is OK & the fuel ball is correct. Also checked the fuel to make sure water didn't get in.

I just found a broken "Cam Follower", would that make the motor not start? I was looking at the carburator and checking to make sure everything is working and saw the plastic cam follower wasn't moving correctly.

Othe rthings I've done in regards to maintnance is replaced the impeller, plugs and gear oil.

Jerry

it sure would because your timing and carbs are out of sequence.

By "cam follower", do you mean the roller that allows the carbs throttle to open? If so, w/o that it wouldn't open the throttle at all and even in the start position, it needs to open a bit more than being at idle.

Yes, the roller. Per the manual they call it the cam follower and it appears to open the inside barrel of the carbarator, the plastic housing was broken. I'll try to repair it this week and let you guys know if this was truly the problem.

This site has been a great source of information, Thanks for the help.

Jerry

111, just hop on down to your local John/Rude dealer and get a replacement. Under five for the new version of the roller.....no plastic insert.
