I recently replaced the rope on a Johnson 9.9. The problem is the pull is not smooth and the rope is starting to fray again. The spring is engaged by the spool and the washer is under the spring on the bolt. It seems that the rope is not in the correct position when it comes off the spool when it is pulled. The rope is contacting the metal and the plastic spool and is binding. The rope does ride under the plastic prawl. Does anyone know what could be causing this grief.

Did you use the correct size rope? There is a difference.

Did you install the recoil correctly? There is a tab on the underside of the base housing that aligns into a hole cast into the mounting bracket on the front of the crankcase. If it's not aligned correctly then the rope will exit in the wrong spot and can fray quite easily. There is a vertical tab on the base housing that acts as a guide for the rope. It should be at about the 7 o'clock position when the housing is installed correctly (facing front of motor, looking down on recoil). The rope should exit to the right of the vertical tab.<br />- Scott

Bet you didn't read the manual - I have a 75.

I did use the correct rope size. The tab on the underside is aligned in the hole. I think the problem is with the vertical tab that you are talking about. The rope seemd to be getting wedged between the spool and metal bracket.
