Just bought a secondhand Johnson 48hp. Just had it serviced. It starts up fine when cold but once its run for a while it just won't start. They only way to start it when it is hot is to remove the cover and manually pull the throttle when cranking (which is dangerous.) Any idea's on the casue of this problem and a possible solution??

Well ,the fact that you have to remove the cover brings into mind the possibility of an exhaust leak into the cowling that may be choking the engine intake.Inspect the exhaust cover gasket for any signs of leakage. You could also try running it with the cover off,and see if the symptom persists. That's just one posibility.

Another is a problem carburetor that may be passing too much fuel and flooding the engine once warmed up.Maybe a float issue in the carb bowl. When you initially prime before cold starting insure whether the primer bulb will pump up firm and hold moderate hand pressure. This will at least assure that the carb float needle valves are holding.

Are you testing the engine in water or running it on flush muffs? Will the syptom occur in water and on the muffs or do you know? Also ,once the engine is warm and running ,will it keep running or does it stall out.Just wondering whether it is just a restarting issue or a running issue when the engine is warmed up.

One other thing,...I assume that before cold starting that you pump up the primer bulb until firm and push in on the key while cranking to initiate the primer solenoid. If the engine is warm,it will not need to be reprimed before starting as it is likely to flood the engine and would make warm starting difficult.I only mention this because you say the engine is new to you and am insuring we're on the same page with respect to restarting a warm 2 stroke outboard.

The symptoms occur with both the muffs and when in water. The motor run when it is started, it just getting it started that is the problem.

I do not pump the primer bult when the motor is warm. I don't think it is an exhust issue.

The primer bulb does hold pressure when squeezed a few times.

If it is the carby is passing to much fuel, can this be fixed easily? and cheaply?

Any replies most welcome.

jk, usually yes, you need to get the correct manual for your motor, go to kencook.com and order a manual. post your engine serial #. it helps us be more specific.

Can't you open the throttle with the lever on the control box. If yours doesn't have a separate idle lever then it should either have a button to release the shift or you pull the lever away from the control box to give it idle throttle.

took the boat to the mechanic to have the problem checked out. turned out to be my fault in the end. I was pushing the key it (choke) everytime I was starting the motor, even after it was warm, so each start I was flooding it. well, thats the thoery, we'll soon find out on the water!
