Hello,
Can anyone give me the details on the bottom end that went with a 85 hp Johnson (Model 85ESL-73M, Serial # J3856855). What length driveshaft did it have, how many water inlets did the waterpump have. I've been scouring ebay and have found a few of them available, but I'm not sure what would work and what wouldn't, as far as year and HP goes. If someone can point me towards any website where I can find the info myself, that would be a great help. Also, I'm starting to believe that the electric shifting bottom from a 1969 85 HP won't work as a replacement.
TIA,
Frank

Re: '73 85HP 4 cyl. Johnson gearbox details

IndyMike,
Thank you and everyone one who every responded to me. This is the best site ever! So does this mean that any 4 cyl. bottom from 1973 to 1976 is acceptable for my 84HP? Does electric or mechanical shift make a difference, or are they interchangable (with some modification.) Does the shaft length make a difference? (I know, that sounds like a really dumb question!!) I've seen some bottom ends with 20" shafts and some with 25". My motor is a Model 85ESL-73M. The ESL is the only part of the model that I don't understand. Thanks to everyone for helping out a confused captain-wannabe.
Frank

Stock driveshafts 1973 to 1976 on 85, 115 & 135 V4 are the same for each year. Specs in the service manuals are for 20" transoms.

The twenty-five inch shaft would be different if you could find one on this series, but you would have to have an extension for your exhaust housing, water tubes and shift shaft. I've heard there was a kit for that, but have never seen one.

The gear ratio on the 135 is somewhat different, which might be a concern if you already have a well performing prop.

1973 - 1977 V4s (85/115/135) will bolt on, except the 1977 135/140hp.

BTW, There is a unit on Ebay that is not that far from you. You might want to call the seller. You can always slip a Skeggard Skeggard on that if the price of the unit is right:

web page

BigNATE,
I've just purchased a bottom end on eBay, but thanks for the offer. Looking at the Seloc manual, the waterpump housing only seems to have one outlet. The pictures of the one that I bought shows two outlets but it looks identical in shape otherwise. Does anyone know if I'll have any trouble switching the housings?
Thanks,
Frank

1973 - 1976 and some 1977 85HP, 115HP and 135HP have 2 water tubes.

Ezeke,
Do you know (or could you point me towards someplace where I could find out) if it'll be a matter of switching the waterpump housing or if the bottom that I bought will fit at all? I'm trying to set this up long distance so that when I go down, I'll have the replacement part that I need. (I hope.)
Thanks

If the one you bought has two outlets on the water pump, it is correct for a 1973 85HP. Do you have the auction number from ebay?

You can see the pump on the parts diagram at the BRP site: BRP Parts diagram

Just go through the steps to the motor, select gearcase, enlarge the diagram with the third icon, and see #77. You can then get the part number below, if you want it.
