MY JOHNSON 200 HAS A ROD WITH THREADS ON EACH END THRU THE STEERING TUBE WHERE NORMALLY THE STEERING CABLE WOULD GO THRU. CAN THIS ROD BE REMOVED TO ALLOW ME TO USE MY EXISTING SINGLE STEERING CABLE AS OPPOSSED TO BUYING A DUAL CABLE SYSTEM. IS THE ROD WELDED IN OR HOW IS IT IN THERE? I HAVEN'T HIT IT B/C FEAR OF DAMAGE BUT IT IS DEFINITELY TIGHT. DO I NEED TO BEAT IT OUT OR IS IT HELD IN BY SOME OTHER MEANS?

THANKS FOR ANY HELP ON THIS!

Welcome to iboats carolina!

Is this a new motor to you? Don't know why a rod would be put thru the steering tube. Without seeing the thing, wouldn't know why it's there. But if it's just stuck in there, take it out. Look at the tube and make sure it straight and not bent. Maybe someone has driven the rod in there to try and straighten out the tube.

I would also suggest you do go to a dual cable steering system for better stability and control of the rig.

Sounds like the motor was hooked up to a hydraulic steering system.

YES. IT HAS THE ROD FOR HYDRAULIC STEERING THROUGH IT. IT WAS SEIZED IN THE TILT TUBE SO I REMOVED THE TILT TUBE AND HAVE ANOTHER TO PUT IN. I'VE SEEN 200'S WITH A SINGLE STEERING CABLE SYSTEM. SHOULD I NOT GO WITH THE SINGLE? THANKS!

Hummm....a 19 with a 200. A single cable will work but I'd bet it's not recommended. I'd rather see it with twin cables too.

Slack in the system. May cause some drivability issues.

Got the tilt tube out. WOW! Talking about a job. Hope I never have to do that again. The hydraulic rod was seriously seized in the tilt tube so I beat it out and ordered a new one. Thanks for the help.
