I was just wondering if you can use any kind of generator for a 1961 Johnson 40 H.P. outboard? It is an rds-23. I have found generators for harley davidson's and for volkswagon beetle's and was curious if I could use any of these other kinds for my outboard? has anyone had any luck with third party generators?

Can't see any problems , except it will require some DIY skills .

You will need to find a generator small enough to fit under the engine cover .
Then you might need to fabricate some custom brackets .
Find a way to hock up the drive belt to the crankshaft
( might case extra stress on the main crank bearing IF it didn't have a generator as an option from the manufacturer ).

Integrate the new generator into the existing electric wiring ( but you must use the new generators charging regulator ( if external )).
Be sure you got a 12 V generator , some older generator were made for 6 V systems .

Arne Kjetil

They were available as an accessory. Find an electric shift 40 and it'll have one. You also need the mounting bracket and a regulator, but your motor is already wired for it. The regulator fits under the cover of the relay box. It's a deeper cover. You'd also want that from the same selectric 40. tcoutboatrds.com may be able to help. I have one, but it ain't for sale. :p
