I am leaking gear oil at the prop shaft seal that you see when you remove the prop and the washer it seats against.( Im pretty sure its coming from here but dont know if there are other seals deep inside the housing) Whats the best way to get this thing out? I removed four 10mm bolts from deep inside the shaft housing but couldnt remove the entire assembly. I dont want to force anything, but would like to replace all the seals. Do I have to drop the entire lower unit to do this. I bought a water pump kit(impeller and seals) 2 years ago and dont want to mess with that end if I dont have to!
Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Drain the gear oil and pressure and vacuum test the LU to be sure where the leak is. Can be prop shaft (2 seals), drive shaft and shift shaft. Pressurize to 15 psig max and submerge the LU in water ... with prop removed, it will be obvious if the prop shaft seals are leaking.

Some motors it's possible to remove replace prop shaft seals w/o removing the bearing carrier, which appears to be what you've attempted to remove. There's a special tool for handling the seal removal. BTW, if your motor has seen salt water, removing the bearing carrier can be a challenge. Once the prop shaft seals are removed, assuming that is the leak source, look for grooving where the seals sit on the shaft. Install new seals slightly offset if there's any grooving. Also, look for mono wrapped around the shaft.

Drive shaft and shift shaft seals require the LU be dropped.

If you don't have a shop manual, I would suggest getting an OEM one if you plan any seriuos repairs.

Thanks for the info Jim! Would you know where I can get the special tool and about how much? Im certain the leak (at least one) is coming from the only seal I can see(right under the prop). I bought a seal puller from an auto parts dealer but it didnt work. The prop shaft interfered with getting the angle right. How do you remove the bearing carrier? I know I could get these answers from a manual but tryin not to spend any more than necessary on the "money pit". Little boy really wants to go fishin'!! Thanks Again!
Bill
by the way no saltwater here. Coast is 4 hours away!

There is a special tool we use to remove the prop shaft seals with out removing the bearing carrier. But....little on the expensive side for the shade tree mechanic. So....

The parts you will need....

Two seals....PN320862...these are the prop shaft seals.

Four small oring seals...PN317178...these are for the bearing retainer bolts.

One oring...PN305123....this goes on the end of the bearing carrier that slides in the gear housing. Seals the oil in.

If you look down into the carrier, you will see four 3/8" bolt heads. Remove them. You will see where the small orings go.

If you have a slide hammer, catch the end of the rod on the heavy protion of the bearing carrier and bump it out. If it's not a salt water engine, it should come out with a few bumps.

With the carrier out, you can poke out the old seals with a long screw driver and remove the old large oring from the end of the carrier.

Clean every thing good. Install the new seals back to back....watch how they come out when the old ones are removed. Installing the new seals can be done with a drive socket of the correct size and a hammer. Again, before removing the old seals, see where the outter seal lays. This will give you a good indication of how far in they go. A little gasket sealing compound around the seal housing will help.

Once the seals are in, coat the large oring groove with gasket sealing compound and put on the large carrier oring.

Now to make installation easy, have a couple threaded rods handy that will screw into the retainer plate. The carrier retainer bolts screw into the plate to hold the carrier in. The threaded rods will help guide the carrier in and you can pull up on the rods to get the retainer bolts started.

Put the new orings on the retainer bolts and coat them with gasket sealing compund. A 1/4" drive 3/8 socket with a piece of masking tape in it will hold the bolt in the socket to get it started. Use a long extension to do this. Torque the bolts to 12 ft lbs.

Test the lower unit...pressure and vac test...to make sure you done a good job. Refill with gear lube

Easy ain't it?

Now if you don't have a service manual and are a little nervous about the seal replacement, take it to a local dealer. Will probably save you a lot of agrivation and get you on the water a lot quicker.

I went through all this just to show you what's involved. It can be done by the home mechanic with a good service manual like I have at the shop and some time. But if you want to get on the water quick...take it to a wrench.

many thanks for the tutorial OBJ...probably gonna "tackle" it myself now! Was just worried about breaking the carrier trying to get it out.

short on time & shorter on money,
one last question...what would be a reasonable charge from the mechanic if I decide to take it to the shop?

Happy Fishin'
bcat
