If a small outboard, of any make, which is fitted with a rectifier for battery charging is run without a battery connected is there any chance that that could damage the rectifier?

Only if you short-out any leads that may be coming from it. Otherwise, without a destination, voltage isn't produced.

Re: Can the rectifier be damaged with no battery

yes it can and usually is, if you must run the system without the battery dissconect and isolate the yellow stator leads,
the rectifier diodes can overheat and bad things happen to them if no current can flow to the battery as the other side of the rectifier is grounded. that current really really wants to go someplace and it also depends on which system, the 4 amp 4 wire rectifier on small jonnys is very tolerant, the 35 amp system will roast itself rapidly, if it does not plain light on fire.
the 3 phase stator on the T9.9 yamahas will wipe out a rectifier rapidly if run without a battery in place, only the Y model does not show up in the yamaha system and I cant find a rectifier for the one I am working on, 2 calls to yamaha have produced nada.
so its not a good idea to run without a battery,if you must then isolate the stator to rectifier inputs.
