I just got my father in laws boat and cleaned it up. Came with a great engine. only that I noticed when I used reverse the engine will jump up. Also the hint was that he uses a block of wood between boat and engine to transport it around. Looks like the tilt bolt snapped. I found the diagram online at evinrude, but was wondering if there was a better was to make it work without having to buy the bolt that will snap..

Hi Woody...welcome to iboats!

If you look on the front of the engine just below that handle looking thing, you should see a lock out lever. Raising this lever up locks the engine down for running reverse. When it's down and unlocked, the engine is allowed to raise which you want when running in forward. Without the tilt pin, this handle won't work because the locking lever won't have anything to hang on to.

So you do need that pin. The PN is 395188 and you can get from any John/Rude dealer. The may just have an old one laying around. New pins will cost about $33.

This doesn't make sense, I have this pin. and the engine locks on to it. But still comes up in reverse and doesn't lock up so I can transport the boat with out the wood piece.

Flip your handle to run instead of tilt and t should lock it for reverse. Make sure you flip it back to tilt when you are in forward in case you hit something.
